I was an attorney before I went to CBS, and I recently helped out a friend in a contract dispute. I though the attorney he retained, Michael Lorenger, was first rate. He is a former Hogan & Hartson partner who is now out on his own with another former partner. Hogan & Hartson is a very large law firm. The advantage of going with someone like Michael is that you get a Hogan & Hartson partner working for you at a fraction of the cost. Typically, for partners as the major law firms, you expect to pay anywhere from $600 to $1,000, depending on their seniority, firm, star power, etc. If you go outside the major metropolitan areas, those prices decrease, but you are unlikely to be much below that anywhere in NY. Michael is located in Washington DC, but is familiar with NY law. I think his rate is below $500/hour, which, for an experienced attorney such as himself, is very reasonable. As for payment terms, you will typically pay a retainer and then an hourly fee, which first comes out of the retainer.
