Here are some pictures from our Fall Regional Conference featuring each of our CSUN Achieve through PLCs educators.
The Conference was held on Saturday, October 21st. Teachers and Principals led presentations and workshops reflecting the many ways in which they are now leading multi-grade, integrated STEM curriculum that brings science alive for their URM students and strengthening their sense of belonging as STEM and NGSS Achievers!
The conference concluded with an inspiring and energizing presentation by rocket scientist and CSUN Engineering faculty member Tony Magee.

PLUMMER ELEMENTARY
Thank you again for putting together the conference. I truly enjoyed the day! I am currently teaching middle school science, but have taught many years of elementary school and learned some wonderful ideas to incorporate into my own classroom.
I would like to have Dr. Belgrad and her team contact my school to learn more about STEM-PLCs.
STANLEY MOSK PROUDLY SHOWCASES
Here are the pictures from our wonderful excursion to the Marine Science Floating Lab on June 13th.
Also, see the news article about the Ports that appeared in the LA Times yesterday as we sailed. http://www.latimes.com/local/california/la-me-ports-clean-air-20170612-story.html
TUESDAY JUNE 13
The Marine Science Floating Lab (MSFL) is an excellent opportunity for us to explore the amazing biodiversity of what is often a hidden habitat. Watershed and biodiversity are emphasized. Activities include collecting a bottom sediment sample to observe and record invertebrates, an otter trawl net which collects a wide range of fish, mammals, and invertebrates from on and near the bottom, a plankton tow and plankton observation with a microscope, water quality studies, and other activities that may be requested to meet the needs of your specific grade level and curriculum.We will also observe birds, sea lions, and other marine mammals that may be in the area. While underway to the collection areas, we can observe and discuss Los Angeles Harbor, shipping vessels, breakwater function, and a variety of ecosystem and environmental engineering topics.
On a 3-hour cruise through the Long Beach or Los Angeles Harbor, we will participate in hands-on, marine-science learning activities that we can transfer to our classrooms including:
a plankton lab
water visibility testing
bottom sediment study
fish morphology
wildlife observation

SATURDAY, MAY 6 CSUN RALLY IN THE VALLEY CSUN MATADOME in Redwood Hall. 8:30-12:30 PM. All five of our PLCs were represented at the Rally!
TUESDAY, JANUARY 17TH AT THE CSUN Orange Grove Bistro, 3-6PM.
Our five schools presented NGSS aligned, STEM Integrated Science Lessons, Activities and Student Evidence of Achievement at this Year-End Event.
The 2017 Showcase will provide a forum to feature PLCs’ selected exemplar of integrated STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics instruction that have promoted engagement and learning for students and their families.
Plan to come and share ideas for the Achieve through PLCs Showcase that will promote our knowledge of the dynamic ways in which our PLCs have transferred the STEM content knowledge acquired at JPL and DCLA [or other resources] into curricula, strategies, or best practices related to science professional teaching standards.
For example, here are some roles PLCs may have adopted as professional educators who now showcase their school’s integrated STEM work:
1) Marketing- - how to use ordinary household or common classroom science materials such as Foss kits to engage students as problem solvers, critical thinkers or tinkerers;
2) Recruiting - advancing parents' awareness of the doors to cool careers in STEM that your instruction and guidance is opening for their children; How parents can support their children’s STEM achievement;
3) Modeling - demonstrating how to redesign elementary school classroom space to enhance STEM learning through collaborative program design;
4) Demonstrating - how to design and lead student-centered, formative assessment tools that assure equity in student access to meaningful instruction and feedback;
5) Showcasing collaborative STEAM planning that transforms Math or Science Nights into meaningful STEAM Family Engagement evenings that are co-led by student STEM learners and feature local, diverse women and men in who contribute to the 21st century workforce.
WEDNESDAY, October 26 3:00PM--5:30 PM Planning for School PLC participation in YEAR ONE Symposium Haddon Avenue STEM Academy
The purpose of this meeting was to plan for the 2017 CSUN-LAUSD Achieve through PLCs NGSS-Aligned Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Exposition for our PLCs-Only Audience.
DECEMBER/JANUARY YEAR ONE PLC SYMPOSIUM
Professional Learning Communities at Work: Each school will meet at locally-determined times to support one another in applying the content and studying how students can best achieve in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. CSUN Facutly members will be available to promote the goals of each school's PLC.

Unit Two: Investigation of energy transfer
October 22 at Discovery Cube Los Angeles - 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM
A ½ hour lunch break from approximately 11:30 AM to 12 PM; (lunch should be brought or purchased at Bean Sprouts which is housed in Discovery Cube LA)
Description: The CEMSPLI “Achieve Through PLCs” professional development program participants will continue an investigation of energy transfer by (1) reviewing wave anatomy and terminology while (2) applying the concepts learned during Unit One to (a) sound waves, (b) seismic (earthquake waves), and (c) light waves. A deeper dive into seismic waves will include (3) making and using models to integrate engineering practices associated with NGSS into the (4) Earth Systems Sciences focused on plate tectonics and convection currents. In addition, participants will (5) explore the transmission, reflection, and absorption of white light from the Sun and light bulbs, then (6) apply those concepts while focusing on Life Sciences by testing our senses and comparing what information our eyes see in contrast to what our brains perceive. Further, the concepts of light, sound, and energy transfer facilitates (7) an investigation of electrical circuitry and power. Discovery Cube LA will introduce the program participants to the award-winning “Inspector Training Course” exhibit which allows teachers, students, and guests to interact with and focus on some of the above topics from a consumer and science-based perspective.
