Overnight Camping

Scouts and their families gathered at Camp Snyder, VA in April 2023 to camp overnight rain or shine (it rained a bit but we still had a great time). Scouts (with some parental help) launched dozens of rockets with a 100% recovery rate, played in the Gaga ball pit, and had a great campfire with S'mores.

In the Spring 2022, Scouts camped at Cedarville State Forest where there were hikes and a charcoal cooked meal prepared by the Arrows of Light (5th graders). Overnight camping with the Cub Scouts is usually at a location within 90 minutes of the DC metro area.

Port Discovery "Lock-In"

Port Discovery Children’s Museum educates children and inspires life-long curiosity through playful learning opportunities in the museum and the community we serve.

In February, 2023, Pack 1461 rented the entire museum for a "Lock-In" where we received private and exclusive access to the entire museum, including its exhibits and hands-on experiences.  We brought our gear and bunked in the exhibit areas, with the support of helpful staff who spent the night with us for a fun, safe and memorable experience.

Adventure Park

The Sandy Spring Adventure Park offers family fun for ages 5 and up.   This aerial forest adventure is fun, exciting and safe for all participants. The park provides a harness and equipment and gives you a safety briefing that demonstrates how to climb and zip line in the park. There are 13 separate courses of varying levels of difficulty.

Each course has zip lines but primarily consist of “bridges” between tree platforms made of rope, cable and wood configurations creating over 150 unique challenges. You will develop skills, endurance, and confidence during your time in the Park. Trained Adventure Park staff members monitor the Park and are there to assist if needed.

Scout Night at the Wizards

Scouts of all ages and their families went to a Wizards game for a full night of fun.  Prior to the game, the scouts and their siblings greeted the players in the high five fan tunnel as the players take the court.  Then, after the game, everyone was invited back down on the floor to take a shot from the foul line.  All scouts in attendance received a special patch.  After the game, Scouts were able to shoot foul shots on the court.

Bowie Baysox Games

One such game was Star Wars night at the Bowie Baysox game.  Scouts got to see Storm Troopers, Darth Vader, Star Wars collectibles and more. Scouts dressed as your favorite Star Wars characters too.  They enjoyed light saber battles and got to meet their favorite Star Wars heroes & villains in movie quality costumes.  After the game, the Baysox lit up the skies with a fireworks extravaganza.

Model Rocket Launch

Scouts had a BLAST and let their rockets fly!  Scouts received free rocket kids and engines, built and decorated them, and met at a local farm to [safely] launch rockets into the sky.  All Scouts were amazed at how high their rockets travelled and how fast the flew.

Liberty Mountain Resort Snow Tubing

75 scouts and families from Pack 1461 met at Liberty Mountain Resort for an awesome afternoon of tubing.  The weather was great and the snow was awesome.  The kids, their siblings, and their parents all shredded the tubing track with speed, dare-devilry, and enthusiasm.  Everyone had fun and loved their time on the mountain!

Private Tour of the National Archives

Pack 1461 has had a number great outings at the National Archives Museum.  We have had private visits arranged in the museum’s Rotunda for the Charters of Freedom.  This is the permanent home of the Declaration of Independence, Constitution of the United States, and Bill of Rights.  After visiting the Rotunda, the Pack had a special presentation in the museum theater where we learned more about how the Charters of Freedom have secured the rights of the American people for more than two and a quarter centuries.

Campfires

We have had Den and Pack meetings outdoors at local fire rings and the Locust Grove Community Center.  These local sites bring the Pack together and allow all Scouts and their families to see local options for outdoor adventure and Scouting.  The Sycamore Fire Ring, for example, allows a large group to gather for a full outdoor event, roast S'mores, perform Campfire Skits, and sing songs.

Boating @ Lake Needwood

Lake Needwood is a Montgomery County treasure and we have luckily leveraged its proximity for adventure and boating.  Scouts and their families can rent kayaks, paddleboards, canoes, and rowboats to explore the Lake, see turtles, fish, and even race.  Whether joining the Pack or exploring with a small group of families, Lake Needwood is worth exploring.

Talking to local police officers and firefighters

We have many Dens visit local police stations or fire stations.  Scouts have been able to explore the stations, learn how the agencies help our communities, discover the training required to best serve Montgomery County, and more.  Scouts always put this high on their list of favorite activities.

Walter Johnson STAGE

Scouts in one Den were able to visit the Walter Johnson High School STAGE group.  They learned what it took to stage a play for the school and community, explored the intricacies of costume, set design and music, and were the sole audience members for small performances by the students.

Telescope Extravaganza

Every parent with interests can help Scouts learn and we have been lucky to have parents interested in astronomy use their skills, background, and knowledge to teach kids about space and give them the chance to use telescope to see the moon and stars.
