Originally built in 1932 Cranmere was one of 14 chalets. They had the following names:
Millbank, Cowrie, Hillaine (now Krowji), Lidcot, Happy Days, Linga Longa, Seals Cove (Cave on the original drawing), Come Hither, Cranmere, Laventie, Malindi, Dozemary, and next to Tristram campsite toilet block - Windsong (now Drum Fish !) and finally Newlands.
In the early 1970's the owner died and the chalets were sold off individually. Our parents had a choice of either Cranmere or Malindi. I remember wanting Malindi as it came with the site's 'fire' shed which had an axe in it! Anyway our parents decided on Cranmere and purchased it in 1971 for £2,537.24 (the average annual wage at the time was £2,003). The cost to hire Cranmere for a week in 1972 was £25.
In 1995 our parents very generously gave Cranmere to their 3 children - the current owners - Angella Wade, Ross Willcox, and Max Willcox.
We showed our appreciation by knocking it down and rebuilding in its current form.
The current owners circa 1965
A new addition to the conservatory this year - my first surfboard. Now over 40 years old, it was the board I learned to surf on - totally inappropriate, but in those days there were no surf schools or You tube you just got stuck in.
There are still some stickers on it - they were required at the time to prove that you had insurance cover.
There are strip led lights on the rear of the board - the switch is on the other side of the wall in the living room.
Very early photo (date unknown) of the chalets. Cranmere is the second from the left on the front row.
