Section 2: Specifics on Graded Assignments and Resources

GRADED ASSIGNMENTS FOR THIS CLASS WITH INSTRUCTIONS (read the syllabus to know what is expected to get an A, B or C grade in this class):

  • Service Learning Location due no later than week 4- After researching some of the Service Learning organizations from our Volunteer Service Learning document (see version in section 5 with links to the organizations), write down the one of the locations you have contacted or researched (if walk in such as one of the gardens) with your name, on a small piece of paper and turn in to me. If you don't turn this is by the last class of week 4 you will be penalized 10 points per week on this very high score project until it is turned in. You will also be starting the service learning very late in the term which will leave you with little time to complete this mandatory part of the class (needed to pass) and in reality is no longer truly a "service" to the agency since you will likely be stressed out and pushing them to get you some hours to meet this requirement (with exception of walk in sites).

  • Quiz on book week 4 or 5 depending on where we are at-multiple choice/T/F, 15 questions, open book-don't forget your book this week!

  • Article Reviews due by week 5-Don't forget to turn in your 1 piece of paper, two page assignment on both the Affirmative Action-myths vs. Facts and White privilege-Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack articles that you can find in section five (documents section) below-they are due by last day on Week 5. Instructions: Please wait to begin this assignment until we finish viewing the Color of Fear on week 3.

  • After film viewing, use one side of a piece of paper to write/type about what you learned and felt about each article-this means you will have a two page document on the computer that can be printed onto one single piece of paper. Be sure that the White Privilege learning/thoughts and feelings will be on one side and Affirmative Action:Myths vs. Facts learning/thoughts and feelings will be on the other.

  • I will not accept this assignment on more than one single piece of paper both sides fully used and written in ink (yes handwritten unless your printing is horrible to read :). If you choose to type it, which isn't required, you must use the same margins and line spacing that is explained in the Web Research Review Project instructions- this is true for all type assignments that you turn in to me-you can find these instructions also in section five where the documents are under Web Research and Review project, which you need to read anyway! (:

  • Film Reviews (3 total) for an A or B grade, Two for a C or less You will need to review The Color of Fear (mandatory) and 2 (or 1 for C or less) other films that we watch in class that you choose during the course of the term and turn them in within one week of the day that we finish the film in class (for full points). For credit but no points you can turn them in by week 9 to avoid a potential incomplete(I on transcripts) in the class.

  1. I prefer that you hand write (if legible) and please don't write in pencil and only use BLACK or BLUE INK, it's difficult on my eyes in my home lighting. If TYPED: You must follow the formatting guidelines found in the Web Research Review Project in the documents section below.

  2. Write one single page (1 side of a piece of paper) about what you learned and what you felt about your learning(focus on aspects of film that helped learn something).

  3. You can choose to review all of the 6 films we watch in class for extra credit points but they must be turned in throughout the term, for the most points, turn them in one week from the date we ended the film and always by the last day of the class for that week.

  4. DO NOT turn them all in at the end of the term, that is way too much grading for me in the final weeks of class and you won't receive the full 15 points for the mandatory minimun for the grade option you choose or the extra credit film reviews unless they are turned in within one week of their showing.

  • Service Learning-Don't procrastinate on this!!!

    • Instructions are in documents section under Volunteer Service learning we also went over this in class on the second day.

    • DON'T PROCRASTINATE get it done by week 9, it is due, all ten hours by week Ten (10). Be sure to have the supervisor fill out the form as stated in bold and underlined on the instructions and you need to fill out the part that is the journal of reflections and learning-be specific. I will provide a hard copy of this form in class on week two.

    • By week 4, you will need to turn in a small piece of paper (a scrap) with your name and the chosen location picked from the choices on this form. If you don't 10 points will be deducted per day (including weekends) off your total potential 100 points for this project-just pick a site and turn that sheet in to me ASAP-the get started on the hours early in the term!! Procrastination on this project is the hardest to recover from in terms of receiving a good grade in this class.

  • Remember, you must turn in all assignments (look at grading section of syllabus) whether they are on time and worth points or not to get an A or B in this class, so you may as well get the most points possible by following the instructions and turning them in on time.
