Conceptual Travel Awareness and Risk Assessment

There are a number of questions that need to be understood by everyone before a group goes into the field.

What is the purpose of the travel? Is this clearly understood by everyone?

What is the leadership structure? (Top to bottom)

What are the predetermined risk limits?

What are the risk liabilities?

What are the general directions and distances?

Where are waypoints going to be established? When is it expected that these will be reached?

What is the topography en route? How does this create challenges?

What is the overall time schedule? How much variability is expected? When should base camp be concerned?

Where are key locations for aid/assistance? How are these recorded? Who should know these locations?

What are the likely weather conditions? What contingencies are appropriate?

What provisions are needed for cleaning up if people/equipment become dirty?

Where are water supplies?

What need is there for protection from insects, sun, mud, heat, rain?

What inherent weaknesses exist in the group?

What are the needs for robust communications? Who establishes a base station? Where should it be located?
