Rabindranath Tagore was a brilliant Bengali poet whose works have been frequently rendered mush in translation to English. He founded Visva-Bharati University, and is best-known beyond the East for a book of poetry, Gitanjali (Song Offerings). In 1913 he became the first non-white Nobel Prizewinner, taking the honor in Literature. His lyrics are sung in the national anthems of India and Bangladesh.
