Obituaries

In Coatesville, Pennsylvania on February 25, 1944, the late Harry Lewis, Sr. and Audrey Brown Lewis welcomed their son Glenn Lewis into this world. Glenn would later meet and marry the love of his life J. Diana Robinson Lewis with whom he shared more than a half century of magical marital bliss. Surrounded by his wife and daughters at home on December 23, 2023, Glenn transitioned from this life at the tender age of seventy-nine years. In his youth Glenn was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Coatesville where he was baptized under the pastorate of the late Rev. Dr. Charles V. Willis. Upon moving to and residing in Michigan he united with the Historic New Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of Pastor Jimmie T. Wafer. Glenn was educated in the Coatesville Area School Disrtrict and graduated from S. Horace Scott Senior High School Class of 1962 where he was a starred member of the track team where he ran in the Penn Relays and was a key member of the State Championship Mile Relay team winning Championships for High and Low Hurdles. He was also a two-year starter on the basketball team where they won two consecutive Ches-Mont Championships. Glenn was also the All-League First Team Center Champion. He was inducted into the Coatesville High School Sports Hall of Fame on October 16, 2004 along with his brother Honorable Harry Lewis. Glenn’s love for his country and fellowman afforded him the opportunity to serve two tours of duty in the United States Marine Corp. Glenn’s life was built around care and protection. Whether he was taking care of his family or our country. He protected those he loved.  Sgt. Lewis was a proud Marine and was honored to serve. His dedication and commitment allowed the Marines to ask him to be a part of a high school recruitment program. Marine Sergeant Glenn Lewis stood tall and proud in honor of his men and his country. Not only had he served on the front lines, but he was also a military track star and a highly regarded athlete in the corps where he ran for Camp Pendleton Marines.     Glenn’s professional career began at WPVI Television in Philadelphia and was hired as the first African American to edit news inside the WXYZ studio. He alongside his wife expanded their careers to include California and Michigan where he retired as a Sound Effects Film Editor at WXYZ Television. In addition to his wife Diana, Glenn leaves a great legacy and fond memories  to be cherished by his daughters: Donna Lewis -Smith and Glenda Lewis - Hall, his son-in-law: Matthew L. Smith, his grandchildren: Audra Crawford, Kamerin Hall and Darell Smith, one great-grandson Darell Smith, Jr., one great granddaughter: Kahlua Smith,  his siblings: Honorable Harry Lewis, Jr. and his wife Regina of Downingtown, Audrey Woodward of Newark, Delaware, Elder G. Steven Lewis and his wife Emma of Lancaster, PA,  Alice Lewis Eggleston and her husband Rev. Gradis of Coatesville, PA, Gerome Lewis, Sr and his wife Ruth of Lancaster, Robert Lewis, Sr. and his wife Willa Mae of Rembert, SC, Anthony Lewis of Coatesville, PA, Larry Lewis, Sr.  of Coatesville, PA, Douglas Lewis, Sr., and his wife Kirsta of New Holland, PA, Talmadge Lewis of Coatesville, PA and Harvel Brown, Sr. and his wife Annette of Coatesville.

There will be a Private Family Hour from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM at the Tabernacle Baptist Church, 819 Coates Street, Coatesville, PA 19320 on Wednesday Morning January 3, 2024. Funeral services for family and friends with Full Military Honors will begin at 11:00 AM and can also be Livestreamed on the Facebook Page of the Emmett Golden Hunt Memorial Chapel.
