Lillian "Lillie" Jean French (Nee Handoe)
Obituary
Born: March 29, 1945 Coatesville, Pennsylvania
Died: August 31, 2022 Graham, Washington
Lillian (Lilly) Jean Handoe French was born in Coatesville, Pennsylvania to Louis and Jean Handoe. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Keith, an older sister, Catherine Britt, a younger brother Joseph Handoe and wife Elizabeth, a younger sister, Camille, Obnamie, preceded her in death. Three nephews and one niece also survived her. Lilly was a member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Pennsylvania in childhood and Bethany Baptist in Puyallup of recent. Lilly was born with dual hearing loss, developed a lazy eye at one year old, and had surgery on her eye at age six which remedied it and experienced a severe appendectomy and a near death experience at twelve years old which required three surgeries and a long hospital stay. Later in life, she wore hearing aids. Living with these adversities was a definite struggle. From being made fun of to not being able to clearly hear teachers if they were not facing her, she still succeeded at school. Through all these adversities, she became a “born again” Christian at 13 and was determined to pursue her dream of being a teacher. She faithfully served her Lord Jesus Christ with the gift of evangelism and touched many lives by her life testimony. Lilly discovered “Chick Tracts” which were cartoon style gospel messages. She joyfully shared them with many people in many places. After graduating from a Christian college, Bob Jones University, Lilly replaced her 3rd grade teacher who retired and then transferred to 4th grade. Then later she chose to pursue the Department of Defense overseas schools. She accepted a position in Okinawa, Japan for four years. It was there she met her future husband, Keith. He soon received orders to Maryland, so she chose to pursue travel and see Europe which led her to a teaching job in at Bitburg Air Force Base in Germany. She traveled through many European countries and learned to ski in Innsbruck, Austria where she even placed 2nd in a down-hill slalom there. She declared “I’m so glad to have had such a unique opportunity.” Finally, she returned to Pennsylvania where she accepted a marriage proposal from Captain Keith French as they had stayed in touch while they were separated. They married in late summer and made their first home in Maryland. Keith was transferred to his home state of Washington. Lilly then taught at a Native American school, a Christian school, and a public school. Her last teaching job before retirement was in the Bethel School District where she taught vocal music to elementary students. Staff members would ask her how·. she can teach music with a hearing impairment. She responded by saying: “With digital hearing aids and lip reading I learned as a youngster; I can get along in the classroom environment.” She used the opportunity to teach children to be sensitive to others who have impairments and, in her case, speaking face to face, speaking clearly, and speaking slowly. Lilly also loved teaching English to students from all ethnicities and many different foreign lands which she did each afternoon after teaching her music students. At that time, it was called the ESL program. Lilly taught for 32 years before she retired. She made every child feel special, but especially had a heart for a child with impairments. Lilly lived and taught a very important ideal: “Do not let obstacles or physical adversities keep you from fulfilling your dreams. Be persistent and do your best to focus on your goal. With God’s help, you can achieve it.”

His legacy of kindness, faith, and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Fred is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Kay Lynn; his sons, Tim and Greg; siblings Barbara Sielski, Mike Orth, Alene Clark, Peter Orth, and Nancy Orth; grandchildren Hannah, Gavin, Mason, and Mitchell; great-grandchild Lucas; and many nieces, nephews, and close friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Wilson Frederick Orth, Jr. and Katherine Orth, of Coatesville, PA. Fred was born on March 17, 1944, in Langley, VA, and grew up in Coatesville, PA, as the oldest of six children. He belonged to Boy Scouts of America and achieved the highest rank of Eagle Scout in his teens. He graduated from Elizabethtown College with a degree in mathematics, and it was there that he met his college sweetheart, Kay Lynn Creager. They married in 1967, and together raised two sons, building a home filled with love, laughter, and countless fond memories. Fred was incredibly proud of his family, especially his grandchildren, with whom he shared his wisdom and his sense of adventure. Fred's commitment to service began early in life and remained a cornerstone of his character. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1967, where he served as a Captain and navigator during the Vietnam War. His time in the military was profoundly important to him, and he cherished his bonds with fellow veterans. Fred could often be found wearing his U.S. Veterans baseball cap, proudly connecting with others who had served. After leaving the Air Force in 1973, Fred worked as a civilian computer engineer at the U.S. Navy Depot in Mechanicsburg, PA. His dedication to service never wavered. Fred was a member of the Masons, a leader for Scout Troop 1 in Elizabethtown, and supporter of various veteran and community organizations. Upon retiring from the Navy Depot in 2000, he turned his focus full-time to serving his beloved community of Elizabethtown. For 46 years, Fred was an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, where his deep faith guided his many contributions. He served on the finance committee, the board of trustees, and in grounds and facility management, always ensuring the church was a welcoming place for all. He also participated in mission trips with faith-based organizations like Carpenter’s Calling and Heart and Hand, spending hours repairing homes and connecting with people in need. Fred was known for his “can-do” attitude and his belief that everyone had a story worth hearing. He formed lasting friendships wherever he went. He also found time to volunteer at the UCEA Community Place on Washington—a hub for social services in Elizabethtown, including a food pantry, clothing barn and shelter. He had a unique gift for making the most complicated tasks seem manageable, and he loved sharing his knowledge with others. He was often found offering advice on everything from fixing leaky pipes to tending a garden—an ever-present teacher in the humblest ways. In his free time, Fred was an avid gamer. He loved playing bridge, boggle, backgammon, and even some video games Tetris and Dr. Mario, with Kay Lynn, and their games got quite spirited at times. He expressed many fond memories of their trips together, including a yearly visit to Colonial Williamsburg and weekend excursions with friends in their camping group. Fred’s family will always remember him for his constant presence whether it was teaching his sons the value of hard work or taking his grandchildren and Kay Lynn on weekly adventures, where learning and fun went hand-in-hand. His patience, wisdom, and sense of humor left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered. Fred will be lovingly remembered as a teacher, giver, family man, and friend. His quiet strength, unwavering faith, and genuine kindness touched countless lives, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, December 14, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown, PA. The family will receive visitors from 9:30-10:45 am, with the service beginning at 11:00 am. A luncheon will follow in the church social hall. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Fred’s name to a cause close to his heart: Disabled Veterans Association: www.DAV.org/Ways-To-Give UCEA Community Place on Washington: CommunityPlaceETown.org/Donate-Funds or by mail to UCEA, PO Box 451, Elizabethtown, PA 17022. Fred’s life was a testament to the power of kindness, integrity, and faith. He showed us all how to live a life full of purpose, and his spirit will continue to inspire us.
Marva Ann Peterson
Obituary
Born: May 10, 1944 Coatesville, Pennsylvania
Died: September 5, 2024 Coatesville, Pennsylvania
Marva Ann Peterson quietly went home to be with the Lord from her residence on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2024, at the tender age of 80. Marva was born May 10, 1944, at the Atkinson Hospital, in Coatesville, PA to the late Leona Ray Peterson and Herman Peterson. Marva was also the granddaughter of Elder Elroy and Mother Fannie Ray, founder of Ray’s Temple in Lancaster, PA. After graduating from S. Horace Scott Senior High School, Marva moved to New York where she worked for an advertising agency, Doyle, Dane Burnback. After many years there, the company relocated to Canada and Marva followed her job. She later moved to California, then to Virginia and finally back home to Coatesville. Marva was a member of the Ebenezer Full Gospel Baptist Church, in Downingtown, PA and was baptized under the leadership of Overseer James Harris. Marva was the mother of one son, Jeremy LaRue Peterson and the aunt to many nieces and nephews, her sister Lenora’s kids. With such a tight-knit family Marva was always mistakenly thought to be one of Lenora’s children and her nieces and nephew’s sister. Wherever Marva decided on as her place of residence, her nieces and nephews were never far behind as she would have them with her doing the summers. Marva was the family storyteller and could tell a story that would leave you laughing from the bottom of your belly and boy could she tell a story. She loved to read; her apartment is filled with all kinds of books. She always loved Archie comic books and kept busy doing crossword puzzles. Marva also loved plants and had a green thumb. She will be remembered for her daily text messages that started at 4AM every morning. If we did not get a text from her, we would begin to worry. Marva worked for years as a volunteer with her dear friend Rudy Mayo at the Hutchinson Memorial Soup Kitchen until its closing. Marva leaves behind to cherish fond memories, one son, Jeremy L. Peterson; her nieces: Virginia Patterson (D.A.) and her husband Gary, Katherine McMullen (Kathy) and her husband Hank, Ernestine Parker (Ernie), Elizabeth Marva Jackson (Pebbles), Deborah Milbourne (Debbie) and her husband Karl, Gwendolyn McMullen (Gwen); her nephews: Ernest L. Marva was predeceased by her parents, her sister Lenora P. McMullen, and several nieces and nephews. Marva will be missed by not only her family but by the many friends she met along the way. A special Thank you from the family to the Abramson Cancer Center and the Penn Medicine Hospice Workers.

Margaret Arbuckle (Nee Renz)
Obituary
Born: May, 1944 Coatesville, Pennsylvania
Died: November 19, 2024 Lebanon, Pennsylvania
The family of Margaret R. Arbuckle, age 80, of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, formally of Lancaster County, Ephrata, PA, announces her transition to her Heavenly home on 11/19/2024. Margaret was known as Peggy Ann or Peg but to us, Margaret was known as Mom, Mom-Mom, and Mom-Mom Medicine. She is survived by: children, Ann E. Arbuckle, Marietta, PA., Kelly S. Hawthorne companion of David Lynch, New Holland, PA., Samuel L. Arbuckle, III, Ephrata, PA., and John D. Arbuckle of Narvon, PA. Grandchildren: D. Matthew Blackburn, II (Clarissa) Oahu, HI, Christine E. Blackburn, Danville, PA, Olivia Blackburn Grasso (Chris), Lyndhurst, OH, Marissa L. Gable (Mark) Ephrata, PA., and Michael J. Hawthorne (Molly) of Mountville, PA. Great-grandchildren: Noah M. and Kamiyah Blackburn, Jameson L. and Kinsley E. Grasso, Liam H. Marro, Connor A., Easton M., Grayson M., and Beckett Gable, Navy J. and Eloise Q. Hawthorne. Also surviving are two sisters: P. Gail Murphy (Lloyd) and Janet R. Myer (Doug) both of Strasburg, PA. Peggy Ann was born in Chester County, Coatesville, PA to the late Arthur W. Renz and Margaret E. (Donohue) Renz. Our mom shared her birthday with her beloved Uncle Jack and was “his gift that year…no other presents, and Uncle Jack did not mind a bit!” Mom’s favorite pastimes as a child included playing baseball, roller, and ice skating, sewing, and visiting her grandparents (Mom-Mom and Pop-Pop Donohue). As a middle/high school student, Mom enjoyed singing and performed in the Meistersingers, an elite choice. Mom worked at the movie theaters to pay for her voice lessons. The Meistersingers performed throughout Chester County and even made a record. Mom was selected for County and Regional Chorus because of her talented Mezzo-soprano voice. After graduating from Scott Senior High School, Mom obtained a position at the local bank as a secretary in the Trust Department. Her job provided her with trips to the beach and mountains where she could swim, ice skate, make ceramics, and continue to buy material for sewing clothes. Our mom met our dad, Sam, and they raised a family living in Chester County, Coatesville, PA followed by Lancaster County, White Horse, and Gap, PA. While raising her children, Mom worked a part-time job at White Chimneys in Gap, PA as a secretary to S. R. Slaymaker of Slaymaker Locks. Our mom enjoyed singing in the church choir, Bible studies, bowling, swimming at Nickel Mines, gardening, cooking, canning, and being with her family. Mom decided to go back to school to become a Real Estate Agent and enjoyed taking creative writing courses at F&M College. Mom worked at Country Gardens/Chelsea Village in Leola, PA and then for American Heritage Property. Mom then purchased Clover Property Management Company, family-owned and operated, where she retired. Mom kept the business small because she enjoyed getting to know her tenants and owners. The children and grandchildren enjoyed working with their mom and grandmother. Her favorite place to be, in addition to her family, was the beach. Mom loved the beach and had purchased a trailer in Lewes, DE. The beach is where our mom planned to retire, but her physical struggles with I.B.M. would not allow her to be so far away from her children. Our mom’s great love in life was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. (Our family had Fifth Generations TWICE for over 30 years). The most wonderful part of our mom was her smile and laughter where a giggling session would end up with needing a new attire. Throughout the past years (2016-2024), we witnessed our mother’s health struggles which claimed her ability to walk and fine motor skills, but her mind was sharp, and mom knew what she wanted to do and was a good advocate for herself. Though we are all mourning the loss of our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she was also a counselor and friend to us. We celebrate her victory in finishing her race well! The family would like to express our thanks to Spang Crest, and Wellspan Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon, where our mom received fast and accurate quality care and compassion from the Emergency Room Department, Cardiology Department, and Intensive Care Unit (these staff members went the extra mile for us) and finally 3 South. Our mom has been set free and that is worth celebrating! Please join us at the Furman Home for Funerals, 59 W. Main St., Leola on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 3 PM for the memorial service. The family will greet friends from 2 to 3 PM.
