Preface - Freeing the Runner Within by TJ Murphy
This book is about running and the problems that all runners face: Solving injury related to running with solutions based on mechanics, position and mobility. Creating efficient movement not only reduces injury risk but frees up extra performance.
Being able to think of ourselves as athletes is more vital than having season tickets to anything.
Running well is crucial to many sports. Running fast, running a lot, and being able to do so without collecting chronic injury problems is crucial to being able to train and compete. It is part of the fabric of being a human being.
Run for sport. Run for life. Run to stay healthy, have fun and burn off stress. The ritual of running is a form of meditation.
3 out of 4 runners get at least one running related injury each year. We need to spend time refining our running skills. When running is left to chance, injuries swoop in and bite hard. We need to put thought into our positions and mechanics or running puts even the most talented and gifted athletes at risk for injury.
A deep look into the root cause of each and every injury will uncover a hole or weakness that when corrected will offer a pain free running experience as well as a performance boost. The benefits-more speed and endurance with less energy expended.
“All human beings should be able to perform basic maintenance on themselves.”--Kelly Starrett
If we like running and hate being injured, we can take matters into our own hands and fundamentally shut the door on the chronic injuries. By taking this path of thinking and doing the work, it holds the promise that we can free the athlete within.
It’s simple but not easy. Being ready to run requires our attention and work. There's no magical cure. We must adopt the attitude that we are responsible for taking care of our running machines like a master mechanic would.
We are born to run. There is a reset button we can push. It starts with taking responsibility, plotting a course of action and being patient, thorough and persistent.
