Forty. The Journey to Excellence
Once we have the vision of excellence, pretty good is hard to swallow.
Levels: (Dave Tate) (1) Bad (2) Sucks (3) Good (4) Great
“It’s the journey, not the Inn.” - Cervantes
It takes a lot of work to go from bad to sucks. Excellence is not easy. It takes time. Greek bodybuilders took 12 years to prepare for their workouts. It takes decades to get to great. Age is crafty. Learn from those who have been there before. True greatness reflects a silky smooth about it. Less effort, more results. The journey to excellence should not be rushed. True excellence has that terrible skill of being effortless. There’s beauty in simplicity. To get better than crappy do less more often. To stop sucking, be more elegant at things we suck at. To make the big jump, jump slowly. Look well doing it all.
Steps
Start with honest assessment. For physical goals, before and after photos don’t lie. If the goals are athletic, look up the records for the sport. Where do we match up?
Next, map out a flexible approach for our goals. Get an idea of what we need to address.
Then, continually strive to look excellent while attempting this challenge.
Finally, excellence is rarely a rushed or stressed effort. Eliminate all the excess and strive for simplicity. Pare down what we do both in movement and training. Generally, less is more. When we simplify the movement, we get better results.
