Thirty Eight. Goal Setting for Motivation
Three degrees of goal setting:
Should. This stage is worthless. “Don’t should all over yourself.”
Could. We know what to do but just can’t muster the power to do it.
Must. To be great, we must make our goals musts.
Rarely do people improve because of the pleasure of a goal; rather it's the pain that sets us towards a goal. Pain drives most goals.
The formula: What pleasure will we get if we get our goals? What pain will we get if we get our goals? What pleasure will we get if we don’t get our goals? What pain will we get if we don’t get our goals?
Achieving a goal can cause pain. Failure can be pleasurable in a sense. Knowing this can help us if we really want to accomplish our goals.
How do we make something a must?
First, put it out there. By telling people what we want to do and enlisting their help. Talk with people who have done it before.
Second, decide what will stimulate us to do or not do what we have to do or not do. What in our life would bring us enormous pain?
Next, start acting like we have already achieved the goal and, often before we know it, we will have accomplished it.
