The sedentary lifestyle comes with many threats to our health. One of the major threats comes from geometric repetitiveness or a lack of movement variety. Staying in the same geometric shapes (sitting, standing, walking, lying down) for prolonged periods of times -- causes damage to the spine and other tissues:
The average student sits 4.5 hr/day at school and an additional 7 hours outside of school.
To avoid maladaptations the human body should never stay in the same geometric shape longer than twenty minutes at a time.
A standing desk does not solve the problem but it is the gateway to more movement.
We have a genetic drive to move. The Mouse trial: The average mouse runs 1 mile/day. Some mice run up to 3 miles/day. When those mice were bred together they created super mice. These super mice ran 7 miles/day. When given ritalin, these super mice were back down to 1 mile/day. When not allowed to run, they began fighting.
