Don't Just Sit There by Katy Bowman
Chapter 9. The Big Picture.
We need to address the problem of death-by-work. Our jobs are costing us our health. The body requires dynamic and continuously changing loads for bone and tissue to have beneficial adaptations. The bar set by our desks is very low and is contributing to declining health.
Make sure we are always asking the right questions? Is our life’s work working for us?
Strive to restructure the workday and the role of ‘work’ itself in our lives. The challenge to implementing an evolutionary model of optimal health is getting ancient principles to work in a modern setting.
We need a cultural shift. At work we should feel free to:
Stand barefoot on a cobblestone mat.
Sprint every 45 minutes.
Conduct meetings while taking a long group walk. (Oxygen is crucial to problem solving. Walking in nature improves our mood and boosts creativity.)
Eliminate tight belts and business shoes.
Take phone calls outside while taking a walk.
Take a nap.
