Butch Harmon’s Playing Lessons by Butch Harmon with John Andrisani
Hole 10- Winged Foot Golf Club (West), Par 3: 183 Yards
Tee Shot
On greens that slope down from back to front, it is best to land below the hole.
Hit woods with the same smooth tempo as we would a seven iron.
To avoid swinging over the top, start the downswing from the ground up. Let the left shoulder lead the right on the downswing. The first move is to slide the hips laterally. When the lower body leads, the hands , arms, shoulders and club will follow. Only if the lower body is ‘dead’ will the upper body want to take over.
Greenside
A lob wedge is the best choice for going over a bunker and stopping the ball short. Employ a wristy backswing to enhance feel, plus allow the club to be dropped down sharply into the grass behind the ball and pop it softly into the air.
Putting
On downhill approach putts to enhance ability to lag the ball, visualize the hole being closer than it actually is so it stops short of the hole.
On short putts, take the break out by hitting the putt more solidly at a medium pace but never so hard that it pops up after hitting the back of the cup.
