Director of Bands: Cameron Yassaman
Cameron Yassaman received his B.A. in Instrumental Music Education from California State University, Fresno, where he studied percussion under David Gabrielson and Dr. Matthew Darling, and conducting under Dr. Gary P. Gilroy. During his time at Fresno State, Cameron performed with the Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, and Marching Band. He later earned his teaching credential and a Master’s degree in Multicultural Education from National University.
Cameron joined Cleveland High School in 2015 after the campus had gone several years without a music teacher or formal music program. At the time, the only ensemble was a student-led marching band with 8–15 members. Under his leadership, the program quickly grew in both size and scope. In 2018, the marching band earned its first-ever invitation to the SCSBOA Championships, followed by a Gold medal the next year. Since 2019, Cleveland High School’s Marching Band has medaled every year, earning a total of four Gold medals, one Silver, and one Bronze. Concert ensembles have consistently received Superior ratings throughout Cameron’s tenure, and the jazz program has expanded to two ensembles, with the top group regularly competing in the Heavy division.
In 2025, Cameron was named “Outstanding High School Educator” by the Southern California School Band & Orchestra Association. That same year, he also received the “Outstanding Educator” award from the Los Angeles Secondary Music Teachers Association and was named a quarterfinalist for the national Grammy Music Educator Award.
