EMBARK Route 1 Corridor BRT (Bus Rapid Transit)

On March 6, 2017 representatives of the Fairfax County Department of Planning and Zoning briefed the Lee District Land Use Advisory Committee on long-term plans for the improvement of the Route 1 corridor between Huntington and Fort Belvoir. Please see the fact sheet and executive brief below. Planning for the project is well underway. Details may be found on the Fairfax County web site at http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpz/embarkrichmondhwy/ and on the next page.

In a nutshell, the long-term plan reflected by Comprehensive Plan change is to expand existing business concentrations such as Beacon Hill along the Route 1 corridor -- imagine a series of small-scale Rosslyns or Ballstons. Connecting those business and higher-density residential centers would be a BRT (bus rapid transit) and, a number of years from now, a subterranean extension of the Metro from Huntington to Fort Belvoir. The notion of a BRT is to have two travel lanes in the center of the corridor dedicated to buses that would run continuously similar to trolley, light rail, or Metro. Regular traffic lanes would be on either side of the BRT. A currently operating BRT is on Route 1 between Crystal City and Alexandria.
