Challenger Baseball Information
WHAT IS CHALLENGER BASEBALL?
Clemson Challenger Baseball is a community-based baseball program that is designed to meet the needs of children with physical, emotional, and/or intellectual disabilities. Player participation and development are key elements of the program. Challenger Baseball is designed to improve the overall fitness, self-esteem and social skills of your child. The games are non-competitive and all players will participate.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A PRACTICE?
There will be one practice before we begin our game schedule in order to help the athletes become familiar with the procedure of playing baseball. When the players arrive, the buddies will assist each player in choosing a baseball glove and then help them with warming up and skill activities. Feel free to stay close to your child until he or she feels comfortable. We encourage you to share information with the buddy that will help them in assisting your child. All following practices will consist of warm-up and skill drills followed by a non-competitive game, in which all players are encouraged to participate.
DO ALL PLAYERS PLAY?
One of the goals of the Challenger Baseball program is to be as flexible as possible in order to make the experience a positive one for each player. We try to accommodate to each child’s skill level and encourage players to play the way they feel most comfortable. We have a variety of adaptive equipment, as well as various sizes of bats, balls, and gloves to try to accommodate each athlete's individual needs.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DOES MY CHILD NEED?
The athlete should wear the provided shirt and closed-toe shoes. Gloves, bats, balls, and helmets will be provided, but you are more than welcome to bring your own - just make sure it has the athlete's name on it so they will not get mixed in with the programs equipment.
WHAT HAPPENS BEFORE A GAME?
We encourage you to have your child at the game at least 10 minutes before the scheduled game time. Your child should check in with the registration desk. If your child’s buddy is not present, a coach will assign an adult to assist him or her during the warm up time.
WHAT IF THERE ARE TIMES MY CHILD DOES NOT WANT TO PARTICIPATE?
As mentioned previously, we try to be very flexible and there is never pressure for your child to participate. We realize there are times when children are tired or upset and we want you to feel comfortable making the decision about your child’s level of participation. Please let your coaches know how they can be helpful in these situations.
