“The beach vacation ” (As PISA)

My favorite beach vacation destination!

Spent the week of June 7th-14th in Dauphin Island. The island is small, sort of a sleepy little town. You come off the connecting bridge and you see palm tree lined streets, a marina and hundreds of boats. There are a few small stores, but they are well stocked in everything you need. Walmart is about 40 miles north of DI, so it’s worth the drive to stock up for the week. Our house was next to the Audubon Bird Sanctuary. You could really see the effects of Hurricane Katrina there. Only the tippy tops of the trees had bark. Some of the trees, right next to the water, had about 2-3 feet of their roots showing. I got some nice pictures, but it was sad to still be able to see the devastation. The rental homes there are beautiful, and CHEAP! For 15 people and located right on the beach, our house was $2400 for the entire week, so it’s a bargain!! We had to walk less than 10 feet to get to the water, it was the perfect location!! The houses are pretty far apart too, so no loud neighbors to spoil your fun :) I love that it’s a quiet town, the entire week, only about 5 or 6 people walked by the house!

The weather was perfect, around 82 the entire week, no rain, just beautiful.

My only complaint was the debris in the water. There are warning signs on all the houses recommending water shoes to be worn in the ocean. Please wear the shoes. A lot of debris is tossed on the beach, and gets buried right below the sand. When you are wading out in the water, about knee high, that’s where all the debris ends up. It’s very painful to step on, trust me!!

The shoreline is cleaned twice a year, but I'm sure it’s hard to keep up. it.

Anyway, that’s my only complaint about the Island! Be sure to ride the ferry to Fort Morgan, especially if you've never been on one, it was a lot of fun!. Also check out the Estuarium, its located right by the Ferry! My favorite restaurant, the Pelican Reef, followed closely by the Topless Oyster Bar!
