- Chisels - Used to cut or shape wood should never use with the sharp end pointing towards your body.
- Files – Used to shape or sharpen metal
- Wood Rasp - Used to shape wood
- Compass Saw – Also called a Keyhole Saw used for cutting irregular shapes such as circular light boxes in sheetrock
- Coping Saw – Used to make curved or irregular shaped cuts. Primarily used in trimwork.
- Crosscut Saw – Used for cutting lumber across the grain
- Rip Saw – Used for cutting in the direction that the grain is running
- Hacksaw – Used for Cutting Metal
- Chuck Key – Used to fasten a drill bit into a chuck
- Cats Claw – Used to pull nails that are driven all the way up
- Common Nail – Nail used to fasten the structural members houses or construction assemblies together
- Finish Nail – Nail used to install trim or doors
- Roofing Nail - used to install shingles, usually 1-1/4” long.
- Button Cap – Used to install housewrap, rigid foam insulation or roofing felt
- Caulk Gun – Used to install Caulk
- Level - used to check construction materials for plumb (vertical) or level (horizontal).
- Framing Square – a very versatile tool used for laying out rafters, stair stringers, and many other things.
- Speed Square – This is a square that is shaped like a triangle. It is used to mark square lines across a board. It can also be used for measuring and marking angles.
- Nut Driver – Used for tightening nuts. Sets of these are color coded according to size.
- Auger Bit – Used for drilling holes. The Screw shaped spur on the end of the bit pulls the bit through the wood so that the user does not have to press on the bit.
- Chalk box – This is used to mark straight lines across material especially sheet materials
- Paddle Bit – Used for cutting holes in wood
- Metal Bit – Used for cutting holes in metal
- Phillips Head Screwdriver bit – Installed in a drill and is used to install Phillips head screws
- Flat Head Screwdriver bit – Installed in a drill and is used to install Flat head screws
- Bar Clamp - Used to secure Materials to a working surface
- C-Clamp – Used to secure Materials to a working surface
- Block Clamp - Used to secure Materials to a working surface
- Curved Claw Hammer – This hammer is lighter and is usually used for trimwork
- Straight Claw Hammer – This hammer is heavier and is usually used for framing. Straight claws are usually better for pulling nails.
- Wood Mallet – Similar to a claw hammer, used when it is important that the wood be struck but not bruised.
- Nail Set – Used to recess a nail into the material being nailed.
- Dykes – Used for cutting wire
- Needle nose pliers – Used for bending and cutting wire
- Channel Locks – Used for turning bolts or screws, should not be substituted for wrenches
- Phillips Head Screwdriver – Used for screws that have a cross shaped head.
- Flathead Screwdriver - Used for screws that have a Single line shaped indention across the head.
- Crow Bar – Used in Demolition or to pull nails
- Crescent or Adjustable Wrench – Used to tighten or loosen bolts or nuts
- Box Wrench – Used to tighten or loosen bolts or nuts
- Open Wrench – Used to tighten or loosen bolts or nuts
