A cluster of my ongoing projects focuses on long-run political development. In particular, I am interested in endogenous institutional formation, where slow-moving structural parameters and short-run strategic behavior jointly shape the trajectory of institutional evolution.
Some ongoing projects: formal theory of populist autocratization, state intervention in ideology, among others.
Another cluster of ongoing projects examines the political implications of technology. Across historical contexts, technological change has shifted the balance of power among social groups, imposed distinct organizational demands, and set political development on divergent trajectories.
Some ongoing projects: bronze-iron transition, medieval military revolution, introduction of New World crops, among others.
