JULY 26-30

Concept

Our HSPD program addresses the issues that face high school football programs in underserved communities throughout the United States.  HSPD provides any incoming sophomores through seniors a program that focuses on academic counseling, character development, and football skill training by position.  Participants are not targeted based on skill level and are not tested, but rather taught.  Each participant gains full awareness of what is necessary to become a successful collegiate student-athlete.

Overview

HSPD is usually run in the months of May and June. Participants receive one player practice shirt and an HSPD Planner.  Typically, the program continues over the course of one week (two hours per day).  However, each state and city have varying rules which may cause the program to consist of only the day one character development sessions or reduced to only a three day program with day one being devoted to character development and days two and three consisting of football development.  Each site manager is responsible for knowing the rules and regulations of their area.

Day one of the program emphasizes character development and NCAA guidelines.  Coaches discuss the NCAA material included in the planner as well as a variety of character development issues with participants in small groups using the HSPD planner and character modules.  These character issues include:

      Setting Goals

      Time Management

      Ethics and Values

      Communication

      Teamwork

      Sportsmanship

      Active Citizenship

      Attitude, Image, and Motivation

      Emotional Intelligence

      Discipline and Responsibility

      Preparation for Today

      Self-Health

      Decision-Making

Day two through five of the program allows coaches to present fundamental skill development by position (for 10 total hours of programming).  Participants focus on an offensive position of their choosing for half of the on-field time and a defensive position of their choosing for the other half.
