RISK AND RESILIENCE. EPISTEMOLOGY AND ETHICS OF NATURAL RISKS

This call is for one full-time Postdoc Position for 1 year, renewable for 1 year. The Postdoc fellow will conduct philosophical and interdisciplinary research at Politecnico di Milano (Milan, Italy) with Daniele Chiffi and the other members of the research unit. The position is funded by Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza (PNRR), Ministry of University and Research: “RETURN. Multi-Risk Science for Resilient Communities Under a Changing Climate”, Spoke TS-3.

Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and intellectually curious Postdoctoral Researcher to join our team and contribute to a research project focused on the analysis of natural risks and resilience. This unique opportunity offers a chance to delve into the complexities of decision theory, examine epistemological implications and explore ethical considerations associated with risk analysis.

This research project has two specific goals: (i) to conduct an ethical and epistemological review of the evaluation methods used in the context of natural risks, e.g., cost benefit analysis (CBA) and multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) and (ii) to investigate models and risk mitigation strategies (in consideration of the hazards, exposure, and vulnerability) from a philosophical perspective in order to promote a better understanding of different types of uncertainty and resilience of communities and territories.

The Postdoctoral Researcher will investigate the current literature on natural risks and uncertainty and analyse how these concepts have been discussed in the philosophical and scientific literature. The Postdoctoral Researcher is expected to elaborate new conceptual frameworks on how to deal with these issues and contribute to the activities carried out by the other members of the research team in fields like philosophy of risk, natural risks (e.g., seismic and flood risk), decision-making under uncertainty.

The position will start on 16 July 2023 (a later date is possible). Gross salary is € 22293 per year and coverage by the national healthcare service is included. The position does not involve teaching duties. However, teaching at undergraduate and graduate level is possible and it will entitle to additional compensation.
