About us
Whether you're new to chess, an improver or a stronger player why not drop in to one of our sessions and check us out.
Play, learn and improve
We meet on Tuesdays between 16.30 and 19.30 at the Mark Bennett Streatham Centre in Streatham Library. We are open every Tuesday throughout the year except when the library is unavailable.
When you arrive at one of our sessions for the first time we'll discuss how you can get the most from us. If you are a beginner, one of our helpers will introduce you to the rules of chess and suggest ways for you to explore the game and acquire basic skills.
Developing your chess skills
We are all improvers - we want to get better by playing games and by sharing our knowledge with each other.
One of the best ways to develop chess skills is through self-directed learning. We’ll steer you in the right direction - chess is very well supported with websites that offer instruction as well as online playing opportunities. There are also many DVDs and books to help you improve.
Children welcome
We can help children to enjoy chess and improve. Children get the most from our sessions when they have learned the moves and are ready to play games with other children and with our helpers, who will offer encouragement and suggestions. We ask that children under 10 are accompanied by an adult.
If you already play chess we'll find a suitable opponent for you to play, and we can discuss the opportunities we offer to play competitively in leagues and tournaments.
We're always delighted to welcome players from abroad who are visiting or working in London.
