A HUGE THANK YOU to Sonja for serving as President and doing a fantastic job.
Another HUGE THANKS to Arlene Kincaid for serving for 15 + years chairing the ABC Crafters. Through her leadership, we were able to fund MANY scholarships.
We thank Carolyn O’Kelley for hosting the crafters and for allowing her home/shed to be used for storing the craft materials and luncheon décor.
Many thanks to all members who have served as an officer, chaired a committee, hosted a meeting, sold tickets, purchased items from the crafters, made donations, memorials, or simply been supportive in so many ways to keep our CCREA alive and well. It takes a village is an appropriate phrase to describe what it takes to keep CCREA afloat and we thank ALL OF YOU for your efforts and willingness to do your part.

Good news for volunteers – once a week, one hour, working with one 1st or 2nd grade student at Peace River Elementary. The Good Friends Reading program is wonderful to help students reading below grade level. The PRE office would like to start the tutoring by March 20.
Volunteers will be given an instructional class, books, folders, vocabulary, & comprehension questions to assist in the teaching. Many of the books are on the AR list & the child can usually take a quick test right after the tutoring meeting.
There is a need for about 10-15 volunteers. Several of us have tutored with the program before when it was very active in our schools. It is fun & delightful to see how quickly most students make progress.
If interested, please call me or sign up at our March 8th meeting at the Golden Corral.
Thanks, Arlene Kincaid 625-7312.

Joyce retired with 42 years of service in New Jersey, spending 24 years as a Special Education teacher and 18 years as an elected Association official both in New Jersey and the National Education Association. Her career included advocating for students and high quality programs as well as improved working conditions, salaries/benefits, and pension protection for all school employees. She brings much experience to CCREA.

FREA Medicare advisor, Michael Kovacs, will give us information on the new changes in Medicare. The Board members heard him speak at the District Meeting and felt that he had vital information for our members. Michael's job is to advise FREA members to make sure we have correct coverage for our needs. He would like for us to bring the following information:
Medicare coverage we currently have (some offerings are being changed)
Current list of medications
List of current doctors that you hope to retain under your policy
List of other insurance policies
Lifetime Care policy
With the above information, Michael will be able to give us individual information about our coverage. He will contact each of us personally with this information.
Committee Updates:
Historian: Julee Craig has been working hard to expand and update our scrapbook with photos of our activities. She welcomes any pictures that you would like to contribute to become part of the CCREA history. Thanks to Julee for her efforts.
ABC Crafters’/ Public Relations: Handy and popular items such as the bowl warmers, lid grippers, and scrubbies are usually available at our meetings along with other items made by the crafters for the benefit of the scholarship fund. They make a nice gift item for neighbors, friends and family. Arlene Kincaid continues her efforts to get publicity for our CCREA activities and meetings for which we are so grateful.
Sunshine/Cheer: If you know of any member who is sick, shut-in, or hospitalized, please let Louise Ratliff know so that she can send cards and/or make visitations.
Literacy/Volunteer Services: CCREA Board members voted to NOT participate in the Grandparent 5th Grade Essay Contest this year. The number of participants has decreased over the past couple of years and there does not appear to be time in the school day.
Scholarships/Endowment: Please remember that at the April meeting, members voted to establish a $50,000 Scholarship Endowment for Florida South Western State College students pursuing an education degree. Tax deductible donations can be made to this endowment scholarship fund which will continue in perpetuity. Members can make monetary donations but other IN KIND donations (car, boat, stocks, valuable artwork) can be made also. CCREA will continue to award graduating high school seniors with Future Educator Scholarships from our savings account as long as funds are available.
Our current scholarship recipients received their checks from CCREA in August and have sent “Thank You” notes regarding their appreciation of the assistance.
Yearbook: Our 2016-2017 Yearbooks are ready and available for distribution. Please come out to our first meeting and pick up your copy.
