Charlemagne stayed three years in this country. With the gold given to him by the Spanish kings and princes, he enlarged the basilica of St James, appointing an abbot and canons following the rule of St Isodore, and decorating the church with bells, books, robes and other marks of distinction.
With the remainder of the immense amount of gold and silver he took from Spain, he built many churches at home: the blessed Virgin in Aix-la-Chapelle; the church of St James in the same town; a church to St. James in Ruerrensium and another in Toulouse; another St James in Gascony, between the city known as Aix and St John in Sordute on the Santiago Road; and St. James at Paris, between the river Seine and Montmartre. He also founded innumerable abbeys throughout the world.
