CFUW Halifax Meetings 2022/23

Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at 1:00 pm at St. Andrew's Church, 6036 Coburg Rd.

Our first meeting of the year will be a chance to catch up in person after so many Zoom meetings. We will enjoy some cake and tea and lots of great discussion.

Our Speaker will be Robert Chaulk speaking about his latest book Atlantic's Last Stop on the SS Atlantic Disaster. This will be followed by a tea break and a general meeting.

Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at 1:00 pm at the Women's Council House, 989 Young Avenue.

Our Speaker will be Will Balser from the Ecology Action Center speaking on Climate Change Adaptation and Emergency Preparedness. This will be followed by a tea break and a general meeting.

#Welcome to Canada – An Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch Canada campaign to get Canada on the path to abolishing immigration detention

We will welcome Hanna Gros, co-author of Immigration in Canada and its Impact on Mental Health. Every year, Canada incarcerates thousands of people seeking safety or a better life in this country, often in abusive conditions. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have launched a campaign called #Welcome to Canada in order to get Canada on the path to abolishing immigration detention. Hanna, a consultant in the Disabilities Rights Division of Human Rights Watch will discuss both the report and the #Welcome to Canada Campaign with us. This meeting is open to all members of CFUW.

Our speaker will be Gerald Gloade, Director of the Debert Cultural Centre, Mi'kmaw Presenter, Educator, Artist, and Naturalist. he will talk about: First Nation Perspective on Early History and Natural History of our Province, and the Mi'kmaw Ecological Calendar.

Join our virtual meeting as Andria Hill, the author of Mona Parsons: From Privilege to Prison, from Nova Scotia to Nazi Europe (Nimbus Publishing, 2017) joins us via Zoom to discuss this book and her current research.

We will welcome on Zoom, Nancy Noble, CEO of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. She will discuss plans for the new Art Gallery.

Dr Janice Keefe, Director of NS Centre of Aging and board member of the Royal Society of Canada's COVID-19 Task Force will join us by Zoom. Her topic is "The Future of Long Term Care for Seniors in NS. What has COVID-19 taught us?"

A change of date and of speakers. We will meet on the 5th Monday of March. Margaret Therrien will provide a presentation on her recent virtual trip to New York to attend the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women Meetings.

Dr. Alayne Adams, daughter of Janet Adams, will give a talk on her work in Global Health. "Career in Global Health: listening, learning and sharing, globally and locally."

We will welcome HRM Councilor Waye Mason who will speak to us on Affordable Housing in HRM.

Come and hear Christie Ann Conlon talk about her new book Watermark. Christie is a author of two other acclaimed novels, Heave and The Momento.

Juliana McLaren will speak to us regarding her current research on "Hearing Loss and Dementia". Juliana is the recipient of the CFUW Memorial Fellowship from the CFUW 100th Anniversary Scholarship Project. She is currently studying at Dalhousie University for her M.Sc. in Speech Language Pathology.

Thursday, January 16th, 12 Noon

This will be a joint meeting with CFUW Dartmouth. This is a change of date and meeting place. We will meet at Oakwood House, 20 Boathouse Lane (just off of Creighton Avenue) Dartmouth. Our speaker will be Emma Halpern, Executive Director of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia.

Valerie MacPherson, Community Health Team Dietitian will speak to us about "Fun, Healthy Food for Seniors". This meeting is on the 5th Wednesday of the month to accommodate those who wish to attend CFUW Wolfville's lunch.

May's meeting will be our Annual Potluck, AGM and Scholarship Fundraiser.

Ping Lu, our 2016 and 2017 Memorial Scholarship Winner will be our guest speaker. She has completed her PhD in Comparative Cultural Studies and will discuss her thesis research with us. She will speak on "Aging and Exercise".

Marlene Brown will be our guest speaker. She will bring us up-to-date on the Harrietsfield water situation.

In preparation for this fall's Federal Election the Advocacy/Issues Committee are seeking the assistance of the general membership in identifying the key issues that we anticipate will appear on Party Platforms and debates. The Committee wants your input in what you believe are the important issues as we move towards Election 2019!

Also, an auction in support of the CFUW International Women's Day Fundraising Project will be held. This year "Promoting Justice for Women in Antioquia, Columbia" a project supported by Inter Pares will be the recipient of all money raised.

Sarah Baxter Emsley will be our guest speaker. Sarah is the author of Jane Auston's Philosophy of the Virtues and the editor of Jane Austin and the North Atlantic. In her presentation she will show why there's a particular reason to celebrate her life and work here in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Our Speaker this month is Diane Whalen. Ms. Whalen represented the electoral district of Halifax Clayton Park in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 2003-2013, and Clayton Park West from 2013-2017 as a member of the Liberal Party. She was the Deputy Premier of Nova Scotia from October, 2013 to May, 2017. Ms. Whalen championed the fight to preserve the Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area, which culminated in April 2009 when the provincial government granted protection from development for 3,000 acres of wilderness in the area beside Bayers Lake Business Park. It is on this subject that she will speak to us.

Many of you will remember meeting her previously as she was the recipient of the 2015/16 Scholarship. Membership dues along with completed membership forms will be received.
