In a nutshell, City of Bones is a Mary Sue fantasy. You have a bland and dim-witted heroine who falls in lust with the hot and supernatural douchebag.
And most of the story involves the characters bumblefucking around until they find a MacGuffin.
Of course, they instantly lose it because they are all morons.
