TEMPLES OF SIES
Uttara Kamakshi Temple
A replica of the Sri Kanchi Kamakshi temple was constructed and consecrated on February 19, 2006. The Sanctum Sanctorium of the temple is similar to Sri Kanchi Kamakshi temple except that a Maha Meru Pratishta will be done instead of the Srichakra of Salagrama sila that Adi Sankara consecrated before Devi Kamakshi at Kanchi.
The idol of the Goddess in the form of Rajarajeswari, in the sitting posture with four hands holding in them a bow of sugarcane, five flower arrows, noose and a goad respectively, is 5.8 ft. tall and was made at Kanchipuram by the sculptor Ramakrishna Stapathy. The sanctum Sanctorium will have 18 pillars and will be illuminated with natural ghee lamps. No electricity would be provided. To the right of the Devi murthi, there will be placed an idol of Tapas Kamakshi, with one foot fixed on the ground and the other bent to touch the navel, with the right hand kept on the heart and with matted lock on the head. Also carved on the wall of the sanctum sanatorium are the images of eight manifestation of Goddess Lakshmi.
On the right side of the garbhagraha, on the outer surface of the wall are the murthis of Adivaraha and of Swarupa lakshmi. In the inner prakara, there are shrines of Annapum, Bangaru Kamakshi, Utsava Kamakshi and Saraswati
A wooden chariot being made for the Uttara Kamakshi temple, at the SIES complex Nerul was dedicated to the temple by the Sankaracharya of Kanchi Sri Jayendra Saraswati on April 14, 2007.
The 16.5 ft. tall "Rath" was made by the National awardee and well known sculpture from Udipi in Mangalore Shilpi V. Laxmi Narayana Acharya. It is made out of special teak wood and is intricately carved with idols of various Gods and goddesses including Ganapathi and Kamakshi and it took six months to make. The temple has also ordered to make a special idol of Kamakshi to be used for adorning the chariot on special occasions and will be taken around the complex during Festivals. The chariot will be pulled by the devotees.
The chariot was covered with gold leaves over copper sheet fully fixed over the whole chariot. The Swarna Ratha Samarpanam was done at the holy hands of His Holiness Sri Bharati Teertha Mahaswamiji of Sringeri Sri Saradha Peetam on 29th September 2007

HANUMAN TEMPLE OF SIES (NERUL)

ADI SHANKARACHARYA
As against what many modern publications want us to believe, the various murthis of Adi Shankaracharya in the present day Kamakshi temple are not really his. The present sculpture of Adi Shankara with six disciples cannot be missed for that of Budha and his 6 discples - Kondanna, Bhaddiya, Veppa, MahAnAma, Assaji and Yasa. According to the texts on Budhist iconography and ManasAra, the seated Budha is represented with lobed ears, long and broad eyes, protuberant forehead, fairly shaped chest, round belly etc. One of the forms depicts Budha as seated in the SamapAda PadmAsana, the left hand kept on the crossed legs, palm upward with open fingers and the right hand held in chinmudra or abhaya mudra, and clothed in diaphanous yellow robes with wave-like folds exposing the right shoulder. This description ties with the idol in this present Kamakshi devi temple. This sculpture of Budha, but made us to believe them as Adi Shankara, tally with their counterparts at Saranath (the pedestal below the cross legged Budha), Amaravathi collections, Barabudur near Java etc.
