Our German shepherds display a remarkable natural herding instinct with our sheep. With consistent training they have evolved into typical farm dogs that take advantage of farm life while they work hard, play hard and know when to relax. They view the sheep as subordinates. They herd with a loose eye and in an upright position. We sheep farm for a living so we expect our dogs to respect our sheep. We don't keep sheep with bad temperament that are aggressive towards our dogs or us. We don't want sheep or dogs injured, we have to trust our dog's temperament and training and know they are reliable with all herd members. With a closed herd, every breeding animal is valuable and irreplaceable. Knowing our sheep's natural instinct as well as our dogs, we build on that. Lambing is a busy time of the year. Our German shepherds understand the difference between the ewes, their lambs and the herd sires. Proper selection of the right German shepherd with good structure, health, suitable temperament and drives can make owning a German shepherd a wonderful experience on a working sheep farm. With proper socialization, fair and consistent training with proper exposure to sheep and other animals the German shepherd excels in all areas. They reach their full potential and becomes the ideal working, companion dog. Not all German shepherds will work in all situations, but get the right one and you get the total dog.
