A Little Intro
I purchased The Desert Dog in 2005 then the Pfaff shortly after in 2006 with the intention of fabricating my own OEM style soft top. I have yet to get to that point though given other priorities. Perhaps the Canvas Makers Guild will hold me accountable and apply some positive pressure to get me moving quicker!
I grew up around boats and have seen varying materials used, so I naturally gained experience and bias through watching which tops lasted and which ones didn't. I am largely self-taught in sewing relying solely on the Pfaff Service Manual and trial and error with different threads and materials.
By trade, I am a CAD technologist. I have worked in engineering, design and manufacturing industries for the past 15 years. Over the past couple years, I've been able to produce a number of textile prototypes varying from fly rod cases to motorcycle bags and have built relationships with suppliers in China for plain and treated canvas of all weights and dyes. My aim is to bring all of this experience together to discover a way which OEM style soft tops can be produced locally in a dynamic fashion.Â
