Meet Mary
Mary was born in North Carolina, and majored in French at Women’s College, now UNCG, After college, she lived in Turkey for two years as a member of the Peace Corps before returning to the United States where she married her husband, Don. Together, they lived in six states, moving 11 times in 16 years for Don’s job before settling in Clemmons in 1984. They have been married 51 years, have two grown children and three grandchildren.
“My entire adult life has been about service to the community in one way or another.” Being a Girl Scout leader, PTA president and treasurer then president of the Clemmons West Homeowners Association led to bigger volunteer possibilities.
“Our move to Clemmons was the first time we had ever lived anywhere more than four years. Clemmons was incorporating and I saw an opportunity to get involved. I spent four years on the Appearance Commission and attended every council meeting to learn more about my community. In 1993, I was elected to the Clemmons Village Council and served until 2017 and again from 2019 to the present time"
Over the years she has been eager to serve the Village on various state and federal committees (click here to see qualifications). “In my opinion, it is a more efficient and effective way to influence legislation that affects local governments if we can dialogue before bad laws are passed that negatively impact cities and towns. Serving on these committees allows me to share the voice and opinions of Clemmons residents in a proactive way.”
