Revised Fall 2012:
The Biology Department has recently decided to remove the Biology Teaching Concentration. This WILL NOT prevent you from graduating on time and WILL NOT prevent you from qualifying for a credential program. Here are our recommendations:
Continuing Students:
If you have been following the Biology Teaching Concentration you can graduate with that concentration. You will need to contact your advisor about substitutions for two of the required courses: BIO/PSC 424 (Organizing/Teaching Science) and SCM 451 (Ethics in Science). You should still take SCM 300 (Spring only!) or substitute EDUC 300 (every quarter)...either of these classes fulfill a prerequisite for the credential program.
New Students:
If you just started at Cal Poly as a Freshman or transfer student you should NOT chose the Biology Teaching Concentration. Instead, chose whatever concentration appeals to you. Within all concentrations there are some units allotted for 'Approved Electives'. You should take SCM 300 (Best choice, Spring Only!) or EDUC 300 (every quarter) as one on your electives...either of these classes fulfill a prerequisite for the credential program. You should also consider taking SCM 302 (the Learn By Doing Lab) as an elective.
If you have questions or concerns about the changes to the Biology Teaching Concentration, contact Dr. Himelblau.
