Piano Tuning

Piano Tuning is done in your home. Most tunings take about one hour, although sometimes it can take as long as two hours. If there are minor repairs this can add time to the work.

The cost for tunings is $100.00.

Repairs

Most repairs will also be done in your home. We carry a large supply of basic piano parts and strings with me to every job. Bass strings, however, need to be specially ordered as they are unique to each piano.

Regulation

Regulating an action means adjusting the mechanical parts of the piano. Regulation requires removal of the piano action, which we take back to our workshop to repair. Grand pianos and upright pianos each have many different adjustments that can improve the touch, sound, and responsiveness of the action.

Rebuilding

Rebuilding a piano is major reconstruction of the structural parts of a piano. This work includes replacing the pinblock, strings, dampers, and tuning pins. Depending on the condition of the existing action parts it can also include replacement of those parts. In most situations the body of the piano will be completely refinished, as will the sound board and cast-iron plate. The end result will be a new piano, built on the frame of the existing piano. The drying method for woods used in the early 1900’s was far superior to today’s kiln dried woods, so a rebuilt piano can often be much better than a new one, at less cost. If we were purchasing a piano for ourselves, we would look for an early 1900’s Mason & Hamlin or Steinway that has been rebuilt.

Consultation

We provide work estimates on the condition of pianos, appraisals for insurance purposes, and evaluations of the condition of pianos prior to purchase. If you are thinking of purchasing a piano, especially a used one, you should make sure the structural parts of the piano are in good condition so the piano will hold a tune.
