Last Dance

Brennan DeFrisco

(Mar/Apr 2016)

I want them to find us together

in whatever place

we've made for ourselves

metacarpals intertwined

bereft of time and breath

nothing left but our bones

to hold us up and us

holding only each other

If no bones are left, our indiscernible ashes

will use the wind to dance

every chance we get

If no ashes, our shadows will be seared

into a wall of old pictures

our silhouettes in perfect step

with one another

I want them to find us smiling

exactly where we wanted to be

when the end came

reflected in a loving gaze

moving to the music of heartbeats

unafraid of the moment our songs

can no longer be heard

I want them to find us and see

we had no intention

of letting anyone else

cut in
