Belford is situated just off the A1 about half way between Alnwick and Berwick upon Tweed. It was for many years a coaching stop on the old Great North Road from London to Edinburgh which still passes through the village, now carrying the 501/505 Arriva bus service between Newcastle and Berwick. In 1983 a bypass was opened and the village was free from through traffic
There is a good range of facilities for visitors including a quality hotel, 18th century coaching inn and a friendly local pub on the High Street as well as shops and a craft gallery. There is also a cafe and chip shop, a farm shop with its own restaurant and the co-op store on West Street is open until 10.00pm every day
Interesting buildings include two churches and Belford Hall which is a Grade I listed building. At the rear of Butterfly House is Westhall, a privately owned Victorian house built in the style of the castellated fortified house that it replaced on the same site. The moat that surrounded the original building can still clearly be seen. It is now in use as a farmhouse
