The elderly are prone to falls and sometimes these lead to a loss of mobility, loss of social life and even serious injury and death.
Almost all adults have a very dangerous response to falling - putting their arms out to catch their fall.
Judo players are experts at falling over safely - this is the first thing we teach beginners. The techniques judo players use can be learned at almost any age and they reduce the risk of injury to a low level. The club has a coach aged well over 70 who has done the special course for teaching adults to fall safely, and is happy to run courses.
You can do this at any age. It is easier to learn in middle life, but we have also taught people in their late 70s to fall safely.
You will learn how to roll safely and redistribute the forces of falling. You will learn how to do this backwards, sideways and even forwards. You will work on judo mats and use crash mats, especially when learning something new and a bit scary. A lot of work will be with a partner, to help you to feel safe while learning.
Typically in eight sessions you can learn to fall safely forwards, backwards and sideways from standing up.
