Last year we made an appeal via Spacehive to raise money for a memorial in Ness to commemorate the Ness and Neston area miners and for some local history interpretation boards on the recently upgraded coastal path. The project reached its funding goal by the January 31st deadline this year, and this update is to let you know what has been happening in the meantime, where we are up to now and what remains to be done to complete the project.
For the memorial planned for the Green at Ness, we have met with the firm we have chosen to do the work, Poplar’s Forge, who have an international reputation. They suggested adding a second child to the father and son two-figure group of the original design, to which we have agreed, and this should enhance the overall impact of the design.

We found we had to apply for planning permission to install the memorial at Ness Green, and the application is currently waiting assessment and approval from the Chester West planning department. Full information about the planned memorial can be found on the Cheshire West planning portal https://www.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk/residents/planning-and-building-control/see-or-comment-on-planning-applications
using the reference 24/01429/FUL The Burton & Neston History Society, along with several other local organizations have commented in support of the application, but support from individuals via the planning portal or to planning@cheshirewest.gov.uk would be welcome to give our plans the best chance of success. Comments must be submitted by 12th July 2024.
The second part of this Spacehive project will be the installation of several interpretation boards along the route of the newly designated King Charles III England Coastal Path, between Moorside Lane, Parkgate, and Burton, and at two other locations away from the coastal route. Negotiations are continuing with land owners over the siting of the interpretation boards. In some instances, these have also required street furniture licenses.
