As with any competitive sport, the vast majority of your time will be spent training and practicing. This page contains a lot of links to articles I have written which explain what I have learned and what I believe to be helpful to other shooters.
Some shooters, myself included, believe in buying as many points as you can afford and earn the rest by working at it. Buying points means you spend your hard earned dollars on something that will directly improve your score. For example, I bought a used Clark long slide 1911 instead of buying a brand new stock gun. A new 1911 (non-custom unit) would shoot good but I also would have had to get it accurized, trigger job, scope mounted etc. In both cases you are buying points, but in the case of the used Clark, it was all done for me and I was able to shoot it before paying for it. Another example of buying points is in spending a bit more on the bullets that work for you and your gun. It took me a while to find out that 185 grain LHPSWC bullets are very happy coming out of my gun's barrel. They cost a bit more, but I get better scores with them.
Many shooters will get caught up in a lot of attempts at buying points where none are to be had. We like that "easy button" approach and try to avoid the work and effort that goes into developing the skills required to shoot higher scores. So, when no more points can be bought, what do you do?
