Basic Ranks

As you advance through the first three ranks of Boy Scouts, you will demonstrate your knowledge of many basic Scouting skills.  These include but are not limited to:

Patrol and troop camping

Patrol cooking

Food safety

Knots and lashings

Physical fitness

Proper care of the American flag

Obligations and rights as an American citizen

First Aid

Maps, compass, and orienteering

Knife and ax safety

Fire building

Local wild animals and plants

Swimming

Safe usage of the Internet

As you demonstrate each skill, an adult leader or older Scout (First Class or above) will sign and date your BSA Handbook for the requirement you have completed.  Once you have completed all of the requirements for each rank, you need to ask the Scoutmaster (Mr. Musial) for a Scoutmaster’s Conference.  After your conference, you will participate in a Board of Review consisting of three adult leaders. Once you complete your Board of Review, you will have earned that particular rank.

It is very important to bring your Boy Scout Handbook to each meeting so you can obtain the appropriate sign-offs for the requirements you have completed.  In addition, it is recommended that once you obtain the requirement, you should show your book to Mrs. Ventimiglia so your accomplishments can be recorded in Troopmaster. Remember, your Boy Scout Handbook is the official record of your achievements.  You will need to maintain this book throughout your journey to Eagle.

You can work on the Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class requirements in any order.  You do not have to complete all of the requirements for Tenderfoot before starting on Second Class.  You will earn the ranks in order but can earn two ranks at the same time (ex. Second Class and First Class).  Once all of the requirements for a rank are signed, bring your book to Mrs. Ventimiglia so we can record your progress with the St. Louis Area Council.  We will also obtain the rank patches which will be presented at our Troop’s next Court of Honor.
