The Bridgwater Czech Slovak Friendship Society was established in September 1991 initially as a link organisation to campaign for a Bridgwater - Uherske Hradiste twinning but developed into a broader project that included other Czech and Slovak towns and other parts of the UK.
Founded as the Bridgwater-Czechoslovakia Friendship Society it changed its name to the hyphenated form to account for the separation of Slovakia in 1993.
The first Chairman was Cllr Sandy Buchanan and the current chair is Tim Mander. Two Czechs resident in Bridgwater have been chair at different times - Marketa Weaving and Marek Delong. The secretary since formation has been Brian Smedley.
The society continues to meet regularly and fund raise for its projects, receives an annual grant from Bridgwater Town Council of £300 and runs social events for the local Czech, Slovak and broader international 'New Worker' communities of Bridgwater.

The Bridgwater Czech/Slovak Friendship society Annual General Meeting heard this week about yet another busy and exciting year of Internationalist events and plans for an increased programme in 2012-13. The meeting also elected several new officers and paid tribute to outgoing ones.
