2024 Ladies Luncheon.

Bridgnorth Probus Club was formed in 1973 so are celebrating 50 years of Friendship & Fellowship.

Today was our traditional Ladies Luncheon, which was held at The Down Inn.

Many thanks to Steve and his staff for providing excellent food and service once again.

End of Season Golf Competition 2023. Walter Iliffe Salver at Bridgnoth Golf Club

A somewhat reduced field of eight members and guests enjoyed soft fairways and superb running greens in warm dry benign conditions, perhaps the best day of a rather mixed week.

Shining through with a very impressive 43 points, front nine near perfect 25, was Nick Cook, taking first visitors prize, a highly recommended bottle of Primitivo Red wine.

John Payne took second prize with a worthy 31 points

Improving by two on last years victory Colin Appleby came in with 38 points to retain Salver beating in form Mike Purnell with 35.

Syd Crump pipped Richard Ford for third place by virtue of better back nine with 28 points.

All competitors enjoyed coffee on arrival.

It was pleasing that Peter Tonkinson, original winner of Salver back in 1996 and seniors David Deighton and Mike Barker were able to join our President Ian Jones for an excellent steak and kidney pie followed by memorable apple crumble and custard courtesy of Chris and serving staff.

Our President kindly presented the Walter Iliffe Salver to Colin Appleby with Mike Purnell taking photographs.

Gentlemen this is final event of the season. Thanks for your support throughout and look forward to more fun in 2024.

Best Wishes

Mike Duke.

End of Season Bowls Competition 2023.

13 members turned out to try and get their names on the End of Season Trophy on what turned out to be one of the hottest days of 2023 and the rounds were played mainly to 12, so that no one suffered with heat stroke.

A jug of orange squash was on hand throughout the competition and most of the spectators sat in the shade.

The players were eventually whittled down to the final pair and Phil Winston eventually beat Colin Green in an exciting final.

It's good to have a new name on the End of Season Trophy

2023 Golf Day at Cleobury Golf Club. - Report by Mike Duke

Six members and six guests enjoyed excellent breakfast before competing on a cool, dry day, after heavy overnight rain left soft fairways, slow greens and waterlogged bunkers, a far cry from last years summery conditions!

As a consequence scoring was much more difficult but one guest Nick Cook matched last years card and instead of finishing fourth just beat Stephen Charteris on very close last three holes countback to take First Guest Prize with 32 points and in third place, only one shot back was John Payne.

For the second successive event our Assistant Secretary, Mike Purnell, was victorious winning The Probus Claret Jug with 32 points just beating, new member, Bill Meredith, on back nine with Richard Ford a close third on 31.

We wish both Colin Appleby and Brian Jackson swift recoveries and hope they will be back to compete at Bridgnorth when hopefully Colin will be fighting to defend the Walter Iliff Salver which he won last September with score of 36 points!

2023 Golf Day at Lilleshall Hall Golf Club. - Report by Mike Duke

A fresh morning blew away any cobwebs at Lilleshall G.C. with good fairways and tricky greens testing our skills.

Ten members/guests battled the lengthened course with many visiting the woods and not just to relieve themselves!

The overall winner Mike Purnell mastered the conditions to return 35 points with the runners-up members prize going to Colin Appleby pipping our old friend Syd Crump on back nine each scoring 31points.

Leading guest Gary Menzies scored 34 points with pal Ian Ross second also with 31.

As usual the victors had bottle of wine with sleeve of balls for runners up.

The also rans drew from card fiddle for one ball, which made up for lost balls at least for some!

The final quartet must have finished 30 minutes later including yours truly!!

Many thanks for your patience and particularly to Colin for huge assistance in preparing for prize presentation.

Our next event, playing for Probus Trophy is at Cleobury G.C. on Monday July 24 meeting at 10.00am for full breakfast, teeing off from 11.20am on Foxes Run then Badgers Sett.

Thanks for your support and I hope to welcome back Roger Harper to defend the Trophy he won last year.

2023 Corfield Trophy.

Today was the Corfield Trophy mixed doubles bowling day for Bridgnorth Probus members, who enjoyed a beautiful afternoon of very competitive close matches, with both the final and the semi-final going to the wire, with John Edwards and Angela Purnell ending up as Runners Up by one point from the 2023 winners Roy Pantling and Liz Edwards.

Afternoon tea was enjoyed before the final was played.

Chairman, Barry Matthews thanked John Morgan for his splendid organisation.

2023 Ladies Luncheon.

Once again the Probus Ladies Luncheon was held at The Down Inn where Steve and his trusty staff served us loveley food and we were entertained by The Twiddlers who were back by popular demand. The event was organised by our Vice Chairman, Peter Gibbs, with a little help from the committee. All in all a great afternoon.

2022 End of Season Bowls Knockout

We played the end of season knockout today (6 Sept.) and weather was kind to us with only one 2 minute shower.

Winners were Mick Price & Jill Richards, just beating Colin Appleby & Jenny Matthews.

Good to see Clem & Mo again after their period of ill health.

Event organised by Roger Harper.

2022 John Morgan Shield.

On the day we could only muster 7 bowlers to compete for the John Morgan Shield, which was ably run by John Morgan.

The weather was mainly overcast, which provided ideal bowling conditions and a pleasant temperature for the spectators.

All enjoyed the traditional tea provided by June Pantling assisted by Suzan Green and June’s Banana & Walnut cake went down particularly well with the bowlers.

All the games were played to 21 with the final looking like another victory for Colin Green, but John Edwards made a late break to win 21/17.

A happy band of twelve athletes enjoyed good breakfast washed down with tea/coffee.

Playing in threes, first off at 9.50am were formidable trio of Richard Ford with guests David Deighton and Nick Cook.

Outstanding performance of the day came from guest Roger Tidswell amassing 42pts off handicap 18.2.

However winning THE PROBUS TROPHY, as leading member, was Roger Harper with creditable 35pts.

Both victors were presented with customary wine and runners-up Colin Appleby (member) and David Deighton (guest) three balls.

Richard Ford recorded a rare two on fifth hole received two balls.

A ball draw for the Also Rans was lucky for the guests who won all four !

Corfield Trophy June  2022

8 mixed pairs turned out to play on the Top Green for the Corfield Trophy on what turned out to be a very hot day and a true test of stamina, especially as some of the players are in their 80s.

Colin Green had to be taken to hospital, as he was showing signs of a stroke, but fortunately it turned out to be sunstroke and dehydration.

Bridgnorth Probus Club have been playing for the Corfield Trophy since Horace Corfield put the trophy up in 1999. Horace’s wife Heather Corfield, has decided at 90 to hang up her bowls, but attended as a spectator and presented the trophy to the winners.

The rounds were all tightly contested but the final, between Barry & Jenny Matthews v Roy & Liz Edwards went to the last rubber as both only needed one to win and a measure was needed to decide the winner, which turned out to be Barry & Jenny Matthews by 5mm

Horace Corfield won the trophy twice and was 94 when he won it the second time. Horace eventually put his woods away when he was 96 and died shortly after receiving his letter from The Queen.

Illustraited Presentation.

At our January Lunch we had a first class illustrated presentation by John Woodward about his companies work demolishing the high rise buildings in Glasgow and all the problems involved. The talk included loads of quality photos and videos.

For any club that may find John's presentation of interest, he may be contacted at mr.johnwoodward@gmail.com

2021 Outing to Chillington Hall.

We managed a Probus Outing to Chillington Hall in Codsall Wood, which has been in the Giffard Family since 1178 - Wow yes 843 years.

The current owner is John Giffard CBE, who was Chief Constable of Staffordshire Police until retiring in 2006.

We were given a very interesting and entertaining tour by Claire, then after an exceptional Ploughman's Lunch we took the trailer ride to the lake followed by a look around the garden.

All in all a fantastic day out, organised by our Vice Chairman, Barry Matthews and enjoyed by all.

Official Group Photo after the tour

2021 John Morgan Shield.

On the day we could only muster 8 bowlers to compete for the John Morgan Shield, which was jointly run by our Bowling Organiser, Roger Harper and John Morgan.

Although overcast and windy all day, the rain held off, so it was ideal bowling conditions, although a little on the cool side for the spectators.

All enjoyed the traditional tea provided by Deana Harper assisted by Mo Wheawall and June Pantling. The scones with cream, jam and topped with half a strawberry, wend down particularly well with the bowlers.

All the games were close and eventually there were just 2 to play the final, which again was a very close game with Colin Green and John Ellis shaking hands at 14 across but Colin just took the last end pippin John to the post 15/14.

2021 Probus Golf Day at Cleobury GC

7 Members and 5 guests turned out to play at Cleobury GC for the Probus Trophy, which for the third year running was won by Martin Pratt, with second place going to the Golf Organiser, Colin Appleby, who following a major operation, played his first game of golf for well over 6 month, but it all came good on the day.

A first time guest was cricketer Glenn Edwards, son of Roy, who is an occasional golfer, but won the guest prize with an impressive score, with Garry Menzies taking second place for the guests.

Bridgnorth Probus Club Meet Again.

Bridgnorth Probus Club held their first post Covid meeting on Tuesday 10 August, with 26 members meeting at The Down Inn to enjoy a 3 meat carvery followed by a choice of Treacle Sponge & Custard or Strawberry Sunday, then coffee. As normal wine was on each table so that the members could celebrate the Birthdays of their fellow members and as Covid restrictions had stopped our meetings in March 2020, there was a lot of past Birthdays to celebrate.

Part of the meeting was for the outgoing Chairman's and President's Regalia to the new Chairman and President's

2019/20 Chairman, Lewis Salt welcoming the 2021 Chairman Rev. Garry Ward into office

2021-24 President, Ian Jones being welcomed into office by retiring President, Mike Duke.

2020 Probus Golf Day at Bridgnorth GC

Martin Wins the Walter Iliff Salver for the Second Year Running.

Our final competition of a sadly foreshortened season took place at Bridgnorth Golf Club, on a cold dry very windy day, making scoring difficult despite greens and most fairways, if you could find them, being in good condition.

Only one regular guest Richard Ford and six Probus members battled the conditions and it was not surprising that, in form, Martin Pratt retained the trophy with a creditable 33 points. Martin had recorded 40 points earlier in the week whilst competing in the Bridgnorth Seniors Open!

There was no separate guest prize but nevertheless by virtue of better back nine Richard came second with 23 points narrowly beating Colin Appleby.

Martin was presented with the Walter Iliff Salver and bottle of Prosecco by Ian Jones Secretary/Vice-President; runner up receiving six balls; third place three balls.

Delighted to report that Mike Barker, Syd Crump and yours truly were successful in ball draw.

Having ran the golf section for at least eight years Mike Duke announced his wish to stand down and requested that younger member, of our Probus Golf Section, step forward to take over; whilst offering to assist to ensure smooth transfer.

Best wishes to all

2020 Probus Golf Day at South Staffs GC

Well we finally met and played courtesy of South Staffs G.C. in dry benign conditions with usual excellent fairways and swift tricky greens.

I witnessed Martin Pratt crafting a superb 37 points (20 on back nine) to win very comfortably from Colin Appleby 27 points with Mike Purnell a close third losing on the back nine.

All three guests returned creditable scores; Nick Cook winning with 27 points from Richard Ford and John Payne both with 26 points but Richard coming out top on best six countback.

Special thanks to South Staffs member Peter Tonkinson for arranging buggies and delicious food.

Thanks to everyone for their support it is appreciated.

The usual ball drawer for non winners resulted in only Syd Crump and yours truly coming away with nothing, hopefully we will have better luck next time.

2019 Probus Golf Day at Bridgnorth GC

Friday dawned with full sun, heralding superb day and perfect conditions for low scoring. Unfortunately late arrivals necessitated changes to order of play but this did not perturb most of the field (eleven) with two home club players recording scores below handicap.

As is traditional The Probus members were playing for the Walter Iliff Salver.

Everyone enjoyed delicious steak and kidney pie in the company of Probus Officers Lewis Salt (CHAIRMAN) and Ian Jones(SECRETARY) and proceedings ended with Lewis requesting one minutes silence as tribute to the loss of Maurice Barton 102 years young an honored senior Probus member.

2019 South Staffs Golf Day.

Originally planned for Aug 9 this fixture finally held on what turned out to be, after morning drizzle, a fine afternoon.

Apologies to those who were unavailable for revised date.

The course, as usual, was immaculate with forgiving fairways and true fast greens.

Only 5 players were eligible to compete for Probus Trophy and Martin Pratt held off Clive Baker to take first place.

Our three guests all performed well but Dave Pearson played level par golf to take home a nice bottle of wine.

2019 Probus End of Season Bowls Knockout.

23 Probus members and Partners battled it out in an effort to win the coveted End of Season Trophy and a bottle of Carver.

The event was ably organised by John Morgan and as usual the Probus Ladies got stuck in and together provided an excellent Buffett, which was enjoyed by 31 players and supporters.

7 pairs played in the provisional round, then it was straight into quarters, semis and final.

The weather was cloudy but dry and warm and the green was running well and with some favorites taking an early bath, it all made for a very interesting days bowling with the eventual

winner being John Edwards, with George Townson as runner up.

John thanked Ian Jones for taking over and Captaining the Probus Bowls team and Ian responded by presenting John with a bottle of wine for his help during the season. John then went

on to talk about the statistics of the season, then declared John Edwards as the most consistent player of the year and Cecil Thomas as the most improved player. John also presented

Mo Wheawall and June Pantling with a bottle of Rose for providing the teas for the home matches.

To keep his mind active in retirement, Maurice studied and achieved his BA honours degree at 80 and at 102 Maurice is never far from his book of puzzles, which is his current way of exercising his mind.

In his earlier years he played hockey and tennis but then took up crown green bowling and turned out regularly for the Probus Crown Green bowling fixtures, but when he got to 97 he found the bending a bit awkward.

Maurice didn’t feel up to attending this months Probus meeting so the President and Chairman popped into to visit Maurice and celebrated with a pot of tea and biscuits and then gave Maurice his Probus 102nd Birthday card, signed by all the members.

John Morgan Shield 2019

Twelve members battled it out all trying to win The John Morgan Shield, which was played for on a nice hot sunny day. Mo Wheawall and June Pantling kept serving squash and water to make sure the men were kept hydrated.

The day was organised by John Morgan, with the help of Mo & June and was enjoyed by all, especially the cake, sandwiches and a welcoming cup of tea.

Most of the games were close run affairs, but in the end it came down to John Edwards and Colin Green in the final, which was won by John 15-3.

Golf Report - Cleobury Mortimer 12 July 2019

Very pleasing to welcome back after a prolonged illness, Brian Jackson, who was one of 8 members and 4 guests who had the pleasure of playing The Foxes and Badger courses in perfect summer weather with excellent fairways and running greens;

perhaps the finest we have experienced in our years visiting this venue. Prior to our game, we were served a hearty breakfast plus coffee/tea.

Bridgnorth Probus Bowls Organiser/Captain Retires.

After 11 years as the Bridgnorth Probus Bowls Organiser and Captain, John Morgan has retired and at the clubs December meeting Chairman Lewis Salt presented John with a nice bottle of brandy, and bouquet for his wife Margaret on behalf of all the Probus Bowlers.

Bridgnorth Probus Club was formed in 1974 and records show that their first bowling match was against Church Stretton Probus club in 1975, so the bowling section has been going for 43 years and we are still playing 2 home and 2 away friendly matches against Church Stretton Probus club.

While talking about the history of our Probus Bowling Section I thought I would reprint a photo from 10 years ago of 4 of our bowlers in the pairs knockout. At the time their combined age was 347. Ian Jones was just a lad of 73.

Sadly Eric Rollenson and Horace Corfield are no longer with us, but Maurice Barton is still a member and is now 102.

and Ian Jones is our Secretary and Vice President.

2018 Probus Quiz & Social Evening.

40 members and friends enjoyed an evening at The Down Inn, where the Quizmasters made them work hard with four rounds of light hearted questions.

They did allow them a break in the middle to enjoy a nice cold buffet followed by trifle and cheese & biscuits.

The five teams battled it out, but the eventual winners were the 'No Hopers’ with 43 points, who all won a 2019 Pocket Diary.

Probus Golf Day at Bridgnorth Golf Club.

Eight members and four guests enjoyed fine day at Bridgnorth with excellent playing conditions leading to some good scores.

Our Chairman John Edwards and Secretary Ian Jones joined us for lunch and subsequent presentations. The steak and kidney followed by apple pie washed down by moderate amounts of wine and beer left many of us ready for a quick snooze.

As this was the final event of season Mike Duke thanked everyone members and guests alike for their support, in particular, Richard Ford who has continued to compete regularly despite sad loss of his dear friend Dennis Mottershead during our winter golfing recess.

We hope to find at least one new venue for 2019 and invite fresh ideas !

2018 Probus End of Season Bowls Knockout.

A record turnout for the Probus End of Season Knockout, which was played on a dull drizzly day, but it didn’t deter the players. The final was between Mike Duke, a 4 times winner and Roy Pantling. It was a very tight game ending up 15 to Roy 14 to Mike, so a new name goes on the trophy.

The highlight was the buffet lunch, which as normal was a sumptuous 3 course banquet.

John Morgan gave his usual end of season round up which included his bottle to Roy Pantling for being the best supporter and Trevor Jones for the most improved player. Sadly John concluded by resigning as Bowls Organiser, a job which he had done tirelessly for 11 years. Chairman John Edwards thanked John for the fantastic job he had done and presented his Wife Margaret with a bouquet for all her support over the years.

14 Members/Guests enjoyed a hearty Full English Breakfast followed by 18 holes on the Silver/Gold loops in pleasantly dry warm weather. Whilst the tees/fairways and greens were OK parts of the course were untidy and not up usual standard possibly due to the cold/wet winter we endured.

Notwithstanding scoring was good with guests in particular revelling in the conditions.

Leading player was Trevor Lloyd off 13 who came in with 36 points followed by Peter Williams (Halfway House Pub fame) with 34.

Just outside the guests prizes, Bryan Nelson and Colin Harris both returned 33 points with Richard Ford scoring a creditable 31.

Colin Appleby topped the members with 30 just beating Roger Harper 29 and yours truly but with inferior back nine.

It was pleasing to welcome back Graham Dunn and to see new guests John Payne and Roger Tidswell to our first event of 2018 season and hope they will return with more success.

Ladies Luncheon 2018

Probus members, partners and guests recently held their annual Probus Ladies Luncheon, which for the third year running was held at The Down Inn, who as usual pulled out all the stops and served a quality three course meal, very efficiently.

As per tradition the Ladies Luncheon was organised by the Vice Chairman, Lewis Salt, put his own twist to the day by presenting all the ladies with a red rose.

Another twist to the norm was to provide entertainment after the meal, which was organised by member Syd Crump and took the form of a demonstration of flower arranging by his friend Hazel Rogers from Bewdley Flower Club, who also provided 7 beautiful table decorations. The demonstration of flower arranging was put on for the ladies, but the men seem just as interested. Following the demonstration the finished arrangement was presented to the past Chairman’s Wife, Pauline Kerr, by the current Chairman John Edwards,

Chairman John Edwards thanked the Down Inn for their excellent food and service, the Vice Chairman, Lewis Salt for organising the day and then thanked Hazel for entertaining us and said that he had never known 25 minutes pass so quickly.

Holidays and illness lead to slightly disappointing support for seasons final competition. However 13 members and guests attended with Chairman Ian Kerr and Secretary Ian Jones joining us later for lunch of delicious steak and kidney pie chips/new potatoes and fresh vegetables.

The golf course was presented in good condition, but the greens, still recovering from hollow tining last month, were a little slow. Thankfully the promised rain did not arrive!

Outstanding  score of the day came from guest Colin Harris, Worfield member, 21handicap with 38 points also winning nearest the flag at hole 9 circa six feet away,a great shot which I witnessed.

Second guest was Robin Conway 36 points off reduced handicap 24 with 20 points on back nine.

Richard Ford and Trevor Lloyd were equal third with 26 points.

Probus winner on the day, picking up first prize and worthy winner of Walter Iliff Salver, Colin Appleby with 30 points off handicap 20.

Runner up with 28 points Syd Crump.

Mike Purnell was just outside the prizes with 26.

Thanks go to all those members and guests who have supported our programme of events this summer and look forward to seeing you all plus some new faces in 2018

Cleobury Golf Day 2017

Golf Organiser's Write Up - A warm/sunny and dry conditions were enjoyed by a mix of 12 members and guests, with immaculate fairways and true greens, although the hard bouncy conditions gave rise to a few hard luck stories!

Not so Brian Conways two sons who revelled in the conditions,Robin amassing 48 points and David 39 some way ahead of next guest Gary Menzies 24.

Probus members were led by Colin Appleby with a carefully crafted 32 points, yours truly second with 30 points and Mike Barker third with a creditable 28.

A big thanks must go to senior members Peter Winters and Denis Mottershead who battled on for the whole 18 holes in a very sporting manner and indeed their ball striking improved as the round progressed convincing Colin and I  that they needed another nine holes to reach their true potential.

Ex dairy farmer Horace Corfield who was one of 11 children, celebrated his 100th Birthday at The Down Inn, where a sister, 24 nieces & nephews and close friends joined Horace and his wife Heather and Son Steven in the celebration.

The photos show Horace cutting his cake, with Heather looking on and a close up of the cake, which depicts the dairy herd round the sides, and his two loves, cricket and crown green bowling. Horace bowled regularly for Bridgnorth Probus Clubs crown green bowling team until he was 96 and the Probus members bowl for the Corfield Trophy every July.

Probus Quiz Night

Bridgnorth Probus Club held their annual ‘Quiz Night’ at The Down Inn, where they were tested by five rounds of questions Geography,

Anagrams, 2 x General Knowledge and a new twist of identifying photos of a small part on an object.

The evening was opened by the clubs President, Frank Trenchard, who presented John Morgan with a token of the clubs appreciation for

organising the clubs crown green bowling fixtures for the last nine years and his wife Margaret for catering at the home matches.

The raffle was well supported and raised £78 towards providing the traditional free wine at the Ladies Luncheon. The club thanked

The Down Inn for providing a very nice buffet and for donating two £10 vouchers for the raffle.

As usual there was good banter between the four teams and the question master, Ian Jones. As the rounds progressed, the tension built up

as the teams sensed that all four teams were close and at the end of the 5 rounds only one point separated three of the teams, but the Club Chairman,

Ian Kerr, declared the winners to be ‘The Missing Link’ team by half a point.
