With Chrome, it's all about RAM. Try to Limit the number of open tabs in Chrome. Each tab eats more RAM.
I don't really recommend Google Chrome for older or slower computers unless you have a SSD hard drive installed. Click here if you use Chrome on an old computer and would like to make it faster by adding a SSD hard drive. I install a SSD hard drive in my old dell computer. It made a big difference in performance.
If you want to try some more advanced tweaks. Type these in your address bar:
chrome://about/ - This will bring up a list of all the Chrome URLs
chrome://gpu-internals - Check to see if Canvas is enabled. If not, go to chrome://flags
chrome://flags - Go To GPU Accelerated Canvas 2D and enable if Chrome will let you.
What is the difference between Apps and Widgets? Apps are bookmarks or shortcuts to other websites. Widgets are applications that start with Chrome. Widgets increase the amount of RAM that Chrome uses. Try to limit the number of Widgets installed. This will decrease the amount of RAM used by Chrome. Also uninstall unused Widgets. There will be less RAM used with less Widgets loaded.
Here are a few Google Chrome Apps and Widgets that I really find helpful:
Apps - There are tons of great apps; these are just a few I really like.
Extreme Image Converter - Converts images from one format to another.
Chrome Remote Desktop - Allows two Chrome users to share desktops and control.
Widgets - I don't recommend many because these eat up more RAM, but these are must have for me.
Smooth Gestures - This is probably the number 1 Widget you must have. I use it all the time.
IE Tab - This is the number 2 Widget. It switches Chrome to Internet Explorer mode for webpages that don't play well with Chrome.
PDFescape - Allows you to open and edit PDF in Chrome.
