About Hypnosis

What is Hypnosis?

It may sound funny but every type of communication is hypnosis. For example, when someone describes their vacation to you, in your mind you picture the place; how it might sound, smell, look like and what the weather might feel like. That person’s words took you out of the here and now. To some degree for that moment you were in an altered state of awareness. Other examples of this are daydreaming, imagination, fantasy, creative impulses, or memory. Hypnosis is a natural kind of thought we all have that is deep, dreamy, symbolic, creative and associative.

In hypnotherapy, hypnotic trance occurs when we invite the analytic mind (the gate keeper of your mind) to step back so you can work directly with your sub-conscious, and super-conscious. In this way, a trance is actually not like sleep at all because you have complete focus, undisturbed by random thoughts. This is just the right opportunity to enter new data into your day to day awareness. Your filters are off and the idea that you really are a non-smoker, more confident or a better speller have a chance to take root, if that is what you really want.

Stage hypnosis is when you ask your gate keeper to step back for a moment, so you can be free to respond to my suggestions with your imagination, creativity and sense of fun. The part of your mind that is self conscience, worried about tomorrow at work, what happened yesterday or a hundred other things takes a nap. This is our chance to let the wonders of the human mind be the catalyst in some on-stage playtime. As a side benefit you get to be the star of the show.

No barking like a dog or clucking like a chicken. This point can't be over stressed. You are still you. No foreign idea or something against your basic nature can be introduced to you while in a trance. If barking like a dog is not funny to you, or might be embarrassing, a suggestion to do that will simply not register. On the other hand, if you do spend much of your free time daydreaming about barking like a dog, this is when your daydreams may come true, even if I don't ask you what a cross between a dog and a rooster would sound like.

''Imagination is the beginning of creation.

You imagine what you desire,

you will what you imagine

and at last you create what you will.''

George Bernard Shaw

Closely related to hypnosis or hypnotic trance is something we all do on a regular basis called suspension of disbelief. Hypnotic trance is just like when we tune out the rest of the world while we watch a movie.
