These lessons are suggestions. Feel free to choose from any of the following:
Time:
10-20 minutes
Materials:
Picture books found on my desk or in the bottom right desk drawer.
Instructions:
Read as many picture books as you like! Try asking the students questions as you read to check for understanding or to guide their listening. Feel free to read one or two at the beginning of class, and read more at the end of class!
Time: 10-20 minutes
Materials: Whiteboard and markers
Instructions:
Draw a tree on the whiteboard
Add 10 circles in the tree to represent apples
Choose a musical term and play the game with traditional "hangman" rules, but if a student misses a letter, erase an apple from the tree!
Students are trying to guess ALL of the letters in the word before the apples are removed.
The game can be played as "class vs. teacher" or "team vs. team"

Time:
10-20 minutes
Materials:
Instruments can be found by the piano: small temple blocks, tambourine, egg shaker, red turkey call
Additional instruments can be found on the black book shelves in the back of the room.
Instructions:
Review the names of each instrument
Review what they are made of (metal, wood, etc.)
Review any shapes they may see (tambourine=circles, temple blocks=rectangles, etc.)
Review how each instrument makes sound (striking, shaking, or scraping)
Invite the students to stand.
Review the movements for one instrument at a time:
Tambourine: when the teacher shakes the tambourine, the students wave their hands over their heads.
Temple blocks: students pat their knees
Egg Shaker: students shake their hips
Turkey call: students flap their arms
The teacher is welcome to use any of the four instruments.
Extend the Lesson:
Additional instruments can be found on the counter in the back of the classroom: guiro, castanets, rhythm sticks. What kind of creative movement would be a good match for these new sounds? Invite students to lead with the new sounds.
Ears only! Invite the students to face the back of the room while you or a student leader plays the instruments. Can they still do the correct movements? How did they know which moves to do?
