競技かるたとは・What's Karuta?

競技かるたとは、小倉百人一首を用いて、畳の上で行う競技である。今日の競技かるたは、小学生から高齢者まで幅広く、性別を問わず行われている。一般的なイメージである文化活動や伝統文化という側面もあるが、一方でTシャツにジャージでも行われるスタイルや、競技に高度な瞬発力・記憶力・精神力が必要とされることなどから、競技かるたはカーリングやダーツなどと同じくスポーツとして取り組まれている。対人競技であること、札を払うときの激しさ、試合が長時間にわたり一般の想像以上に気力、体力も求められることなどから「畳の上の格闘技」とも形容される。

Furthermore, every year there is a competition to find the best female karuta player in Japan (the "Queen") and the best male karuta player in Japan (the "Master" or "Meijin").
