The Ministry of Education provides school boards with additional funding for students who require specialized equipment. Each board is allocated per pupil amounts (PPA) based on student enrolment and is used for computer related purchases. It is the board's job to decide how to spend that money and how to best serve the students; they are encouraged to share equipment, pass things from one student to another as needed and as able. In addition to that, boards may request additional funding for students who require non computer equipment (such as change tables, specialized chairs, standing frames, walkers, hearing aides, etc) through claims-based funding. SEA funding is for the purchase of essential equipment for students to access the curriculum, however, curriculum resources cannot be included as part of the SEA claim. The need for the equipment must be in the student's IEP, demonstrating that they will use it during lessons as well as assessment.
Standing frames such as this are also AT
and included in the SEA claims.
The Ministry of Education guide for SEA Funding for the 2012-2013 year
can be found here: 2012-2013 SEA Guidelines
At the bottom of the page, I have attached a brochure I created to help describe what is involved in the process of getting SEA funding for a student.
Each school board has varying policies and protocols to address SEA funding and some have guides for parents. Below is a chart with the policies and parent resources that I was able to find, organized by school board.
