La Unión de Ornitólogos del Perú en un trabajo conjunto con Manuel A. Plenge, hacemos un esfuerzo para poner a disposición de ornitólogos, investigadores, aficionados, y del público en general, esta obra donde se hace una compilación de toda la bibliografía de las aves del Perú publicada desde el año 1590 hasta la actualidad.
Estamos seguros que esta recopilación de más de 420 años de bibliografía sobre las aves del Perú será una contribución para el desarrollo de la ornitología como ciencia en el país, y con la esperanza de que sea así, ponemos a disposición estos documentos, precedidos por la presentación hecha por el autor.

PRESENTATION
In my youth I had a slight interest in birds, watching them sporadically where I lived in Miraflores, Lima. Sometime in the early 60’s I took an interest in photography. Two books published by the National Geographic Society illustrating birds with photographs inspired me to start photographing birds. No easy task as I found out. At the time there were no reference books/guides to identify the birds of Lima, let alone Peru. Maria Koepcke published in 1964, “Las aves del Departamento de Lima” with black and white line drawings and a basic bibliography. In 1966, “The species of birds of South America” by Rodolphe Meyer de Schauensee was published.
With these early references I became more interested in birds and started to obtain copies of the bibliographic references listed therein. From these references I obtained other bibliographic references, which in turn mentioned additional references increasing my knowledge of Peruvian birds. In 1967, I became a member of four ornithological societies and started receiving their journals (Auk, Condor, Ibis, Wilson Bulletin). Later I subscripted to other organizations to receive their publications.
As I worked in the Logistic Division of a North American mining company, my normal working activities limited my outings to weekends near Lima. Consequently, in my daily spare time I concentrated on researching where ornithologists, investigators and others published on Peruvian birds. I then endeavored to obtain printed copies, reprints, xerox copies, and lately pdf copies. I do not include reports and gray literature unless they give very important information or are cited repeatedly in published papers. The amount of reports on Peruvian birds is staggering and mostly not available in libraries, universities, institutions, etc. The result is shown in the attached “Bibliography of the birds of Peru”.

PRESENTACIÓN
En mi juventud tenía un ligero interés en las aves observándolas esporádicamente donde vivía en Miraflores, Lima. En algún momento a principios de los años ’60 comencé a tener un interés en la fotografía. Dos libros publicados por la “National Geographic Society” ilustrando aves mediante fotografías me inspiraron en comenzar a fotografiar las aves. Encontré que no era tarea fácil. En ese entonces no existían libros/guías para identificar las aves de Lima, ni que decír del Perú. Maria Koepcke publicó en 1964, “Las aves del Departamento de Lima” con ilustraciones en blanco y negro y una bibliografía básica. En 1966, se publicó “The species of birds of South America” por Rodolphe Meyer de Schauensee.
Después de estas oportunas publicaciones aumentó mi interés en las aves y comencé a obtener copias de las referencias bibliográficas que ahí se mencionan. De las referencias citadas obtuve otras referencias bibliográficas, que a su vez mencionaban otras adicionales incrementando mis conocimientos sobre las aves del Perú. En 1967 me hice miembro de cuatro sociedades ornitológicas y comencé a recibír sus publicaciones (Auk, Condor, Ibis, Wilson Bulletin). Posteriormente me suscribí a otras organizaciones para recibir sus publicaciones.
Como trabajaba en la División de Logística de una empresa minera norteamericana, mis actividades normales se limitaban a salidas durante los fines de semana y cerca de Lima. Por lo tanto, en mi tiempo diario disponible me concentré en investigar en donde los ornitólogos, investigadores y otros publicaban sobre aves del Perú. Entonces trataba de obtener copias impresas, separatas, copias xerox, y últimamente copias pdf. No incluyo reportes y literatura grís a menos que contengan información muy importante o sean citadas repetidas veces en artículos publicados. La cantidad de reportes sobre aves peruanas es inmensa y la mayoría no está disponibles en bibliotecas, universidades, instituciones, etc. El resultado se muestra en el adjunto “Bibliografía de las aves del Perú”.
