2020 was a washout as far as organised events were concerned. Although there was an improvement in 2021 many events were still cancelled. Equally when events were held it was often the case that write ups were not forwarded for inclusion in this page, therefore the following relates to those events where a write up was provided or copied from The Section Facebook Page
Stables Cafe Meet 21st April: Our first meet at the Stables, West Harptree Post lockdown release. Excellent weather and very well organised by the staff.

See you all next month. Dave & Anita.
Black & White Camping Weekend – 24th to 27th June: Like many clubs and organisations camping has been out of the question due to pandemic restrictions. However, this event was able to go ahead as some restrictions were eased. As a consequence, it was necessary to restrict the number of attendees with pre-booking being a prerequisite with payment direct to the site on arrival. In total we had 32 attendees made up of 14 tents one caravan and three campers/motor homes from the following Sections:
Norther: 3 Yorkshire: 2 South East: 1 South West: 2 East Anglia: 2 Western: 22
26 members and guests arrived on the Thursday which gives a good indication of the demographic age of members. The gazebo was put to good use offering free tea, coffee, biscuits and flap jacks and to ensure everyone kept safe, hand sanitiser was placed at the entrance.
On Thursday a “fish & Chip” run was planned but had to be cancelled as the organisers were not happy handling money. This did not prevent individuals or small groups from indulging or doing their own thing. As usual no ride outs and walks were planned for Friday and Saturday as this area has many options for both yet on both days, there were only a few members not taking advantage of the surroundings.
For Saturday the usual game of boules was organised by Sue and in the evening there was the usual BBQ followed by a couple of games of Bingo. We were all hoping the weather would be dry especially for the Saturday but as it turned out rain was only experienced during Thursday and Friday nights with Saturday being very warm with sunny periods.
22 took part in the Boules and as usual competition was very keen with a measuring string being used on a number of occasions. The winner was Paul Rodriguez who if my memory serves me correct he has also won in the past and claimed the bottle of wine. For the BBQ the bangers and burgers were purchased from the onsite farm shop as they are of excellent quality and very tasty. Various salad options were available prepared by Sue ably assisted by Pete, Jean, Jenny, Michele and Debbie (much appreciated), for members to help themselves whilst Denis and Colin did the cooking. As has become the norm hand sanitisation and face coverings were required when collecting food. As a testament to everyone having their fill all the bangers and burgers disappeared along with the majority of the salads, no one goes hungry at a Western Section Camping Weekend. Again following tradition a couple of games of Bingo followed with newly married Debbie Cambourne winning a line and a box of chocolates and Paul Rodriguez wining the full house winning another bottle of wine (may have to ban Paul from taking part in the future). in the second game Christine Senior won the chocolates but try as we might we could not remember who won the wine and after a few phone calls we were none the wiser.
Overnight on Saturday was dry with no condensation and Sunday dawned fine and dry so everyone was able to get packed up without any issues. From the feedback we have had everyone enjoyed the weekend with pressure being applied for us to run the event again next year, hmm, will have to give this some thought.
Finally, we have to acknowledge that everyone followed the requested sanitising, social distancing etc, this helped enormously towards the success of the whole weekend, thanks to all.
Silver Fox Café 2nd September 2021: Having noticed that the iconic Silver Fox Café at Newnham-On-Severn was opening after many years lying derelict, Jenny and I decided to stop by for lunch one day.
The Silver Fox, an iconic transport café that once served egg and chips to stars such as Richard Burton and Tom Jones as they made their way back to the Green Green Grass of home, is being brought back to life. Malcolm Ward and his family have re-opened the café which was once an essential stopover for entertainers travelling between England and Wales in the days before the Severn Bridge and the M5. And it wasn't just Welsh stars heading home that called in to the café on the A48 between Gloucester and Chepstow. During the 1960s the Silver Fox was constantly busy with motorists, HGV drivers and locals hoping for a glimpse of celebrity customers such as The Beatles, The Who, the Rolling Stones, Ozzy Osbourne and John Lennon and Yoko Ono. According to legend a jacket once belonging to drummer Ringo Starr was auctioned by Bonhams in London in 1993 for £220, complete with a “receipt in pocket from Silver Fox Café, Newnham-on-Severn, for egg, chips, bread, butter and tea.” Jenny and I were so impressed with the venue, which sported an old BSA bantam inside, that we decided it was worth considering the Café for a regular lunch meeting next year. In the meantime, an impromptu lunch meet was planned for the coming Thursday to see what support it would get, and we were very pleased to attract 34 members to the venue. Some decided to stay inside and some took advantage of the large outdoor seating area. The owner and his team did a wonderful job of serving us all with late breakfasts, lunches and afternoon tea and cakes. Malcolm is doing a very good job of renovation so far, he says that the car-park, which is gravel at present, is on his list of ‘to do’ jobs. This is definitely a venue which will be a regular lunch meet in next year’s programme.
Devauden Cream Teas 5th September: During the drive down the outside temperature was in the low 20's but as we climbed towards Devauden this dropped to 15. However, by 1.00pm the sun was out and the temperature climbed as members began to arrive. After the usual tea/coffee and a chat it was time to serve the cream teas prepared by Jean Cox who never fails to please. In a short time there was little left although some did manage seconds. Sorry Denis no chance to save any for you. Another successful event and next weekend its the Sorebutts Rally, only hope the weather is as pleasant.
Sorebutts Rally September 2021: Another cracking rally in glorious Devon, we had 85 members this year which is probably the best turnout so far. 10 campervans, 2 caravans and loads of tents made for a fairly full field. Weather was a bit damp on Thursday but behaved itself for the rest of the weekend. The boules competition organised by Sue was won by Dave Hopkins, the winners of the quiz were Jan and Ian Hibbert. The grand raffle proved popular with some fantastic prizes on offer. First prize of a weekend in a bell tent at next year’s rally was won by Chris Tite. The BBQ was well organised by Colin and Denis our resident chefs along with their bevy of food preparation helpers, no mean feat to feed 80 people, well done team. Another record broken this year was the amount of cakes consumed over the weekend. We got through about 16 cakes, thanks to all those who made them. Our thanks go out to all those who helped stage the event, Jen and I are looking forward to next year already.
