What is outsourcing ?

It is the transfer of a business process or activity to a supplier.

The relevant processes or activities include only non-core functions such as accounting, human resources or information technology. In fact, I.T. was the first outsourced process.

It is important to understand the difference between "non-core" and "unimportant". All business activities are important as long as they contribute to the well being of the business, but not all activities are "core" activities. A builder's core activity, for example is construction. The accounting process is important to the builder, but is not a "core" activity.

Why outsource ?

The main reason to outsource a non-core function is due to a lack of the required expertise within the company. To acquire it by traditional means, results in a major outlay of funds. For example, to create an accounting department from the ground up is far more expensive than to outsource the whole process.

Another reason to outsource is that it allows a company to concentrate its efforts and resources on its core activities. It enables the company to specialize on what it does best and thus increase revenues and decrease costs.

Finally, you should ask yourself two simple questions. How good are you at processing non-core functions? Would you be contracted by others to do it for them? If the answer is no, than you should consider outsourcing.
