RAF Station Blackpool was officially opened on the 23rd of October 1939 with the Volunteer Reserve taking charge. On December 1st it became known as RAF Squires Gate. Some 235 buildings were constructed at Squires Gate for use in WW2, peaking in 1940. Most buildings were given standardised drawing numbers that were used throughout airfields in the UK. As materials began to run out most buildings were of temporary construction usually made from timber or nissen hutting, only critical buildings such blast shelters, defence posts, battle HQ and the control tower were of brick construction.
The first RAF squadrons to arrive were No63 and No75 from Oxfordshire and No215 squadron with their Wellingtons and Battles. No bombing raids were ever initiated from Squires Gate as the extra distance to travel would have vastly reduced the pay load and range the bombers could fly. However many aircraft set off from southern airfields and flew the return leg into squires gate for maintenance, extra training and general repair. Squires Gate, therefore, became a Coastal Command Centre monitoring ships in the Irish sea. 45 bombs were dropped on Blackpool and the surrounding area, 19 hitting Squires gate.

During the first two years of WW2 Coastal Command stations always remained the poor relations to Bomber and Fighter command. However, late into 1940 the number of ships sunk by German U-boats became so bad the government began to invest money into Coastal Command stations. At its height RAF Squires gate had thousands of people pass through, below is the station in its prime.
As you can appreciate in this period so many changes took place, I have tried to capture the best bits and hope to fill some gaps later.
